Jephtha est une œuvre particulière. Le thème biblique et sacrificiel donne une dimension émotionnelle très forte à cet oratorio, à travers le doute du père, la révolte de la mère, l’acceptation extrêmement touchante de la fille de Jephté. Ces trois personnages principaux bouleversants expriment une intensité dramatique à l’image d’Iphigénie allant sur le bûcher. Et puis vient la voix de l’ange, qui tout à coup éclaire la scène. Ce que j’aime également dans l’oratorio chez Händel, ce sont les grandes masses chorales. Händel redevient allemand. Il y développe une dimension contrapuntique, ce côté fouillé des harmonies. En somme, il n’y a pas ici que la vocalité, l’écriture orchestrale et chorale en font une œuvre monumentale.
