Jérôme Varnier (Bass) entered the Ecole d'Art Lyrique at the Paris Opera in  1990.

In 1992, he made his debut as Sarastro (The Magic Flute) at Opéra Lyon, sang with the Berlin Philharmonic in Le Pauvre Matelot by Milhaud, and also at the Imperial Theatre of Compiègne in Christophe Colomb, also by Milhaud.  Since 1993 he has sung the roles of Der Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Caronte (L'Orfeo) at Opéra Nancy, and sung in the production of Phaëton (Lully) for the re-opening of Opéra Lyon. For the Opera Nantes, he has sung The Magic Flute and Eugene Onieguin, the role of Polyphemus in Acis and Galathea and in a national tour of France.  At the Opéra Comique in Paris he has sung Le Duc de Vérone in Roméo et Juliette (Gounod) and Colline in La Bohème. Then he was Eremit in Freischütz and Prince de Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur in Lausanne Opera, and Surin in Pique Dame by Tchaikowski in Montpellier. In Strasbourg (Don Pedro in Béatrice et Bénédict, Cantates profanes by Bach), in Bordeaux (Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte, Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Angelotti in Tosca, Colline in La Boheme, Samuel in Ballo in Maschera, Nettuno in Idomeneo), in Sao Carlos Lisboa (Le Bailli in Werther, and Colline in la Boheme). He sang Zuniga in Carmen in Bremen and Capitole de Toulouse. Also in L'Upupa by Henze in Opera Lyon and Tokyo Suntory Hall, and in Le Balcon by Peter Eötvös in Aix-en-Provence Festival, Toulouse and Amsterdam Opera.

For the Paris Opera, he has sung three productions: Les Brigands by Offenbach in the Bastille and Salomé (fifth Hebrew) the later which played in Seoul, Korea, and recently Haushoffmeister in Capriccio by Strauss in Opéra Garnier.

A member of the troupe at Opéra Lyon between 1995 and 2000, he has been heard in Die Fledermaus, Die Zauberflöte, Carmen, Don Carlos, La Bohème, Elektra, Doktor Faustus, L'Orfeo, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue (Dukas), Zelmira (Rossini), Barbiere di Siviglia, Falstaff, Idomeneo and The Cunning Little Vixen (Janacek). In this opera house, he also performed in the Peter Stein's Falstaff and Eugen Onieguin, and Les Contes d'Hoffmann.

Mr. Varnier has sung with conductors Myung-Whun Chung (Benvenuto Cellini in Opera Bastille, Salomé in Korea), Louis Langrée (Les Brigands, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, Idomeneo, Fortunio), Marc Minkowski (Phaëton, L'Orfeo, Hippolyte et Aricie, Pelléas et Mélisande in Leipzig, Roméo et Juliette by Berlioz in Birmingham), Michel Plasson (Roméo et Juliette by Gounod, Le Premier Cercle), David Robertson (La Bohème, The Cunning Little Vixen), Kent Nagano (Die Zauberflöte, Carmen, Doktor Faustus) and Bernard Haitink (Pélléas et Mélisande), Zoltan Kocsis (Pelléas et Mélisande), Rafael Frübeck de Burgos (la Vida Breve), Marcello Viotti (Golgotha de Franck Martin in Munich), Jesus Lopez-Cobos (L'Enfance du Christ by Berlioz in Munich), Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos (La Vida Breve by Manuel de Falla in Théâtre Mogador in Paris and Torino), Antonio Pappano (Guillaume Tell by Rossini with Accademia Nazionale Sta Cecilia di Roma).

He has recently made his debut in Macbeth (Banco) and Aida (Ramfis) in Opera Auditorium of Dijon, and his first Seneca in Incoronazione di Poppea in Bordeaux in a staging of Robert Carsen. Hippolyte et Aricie by Rameau and Oedipe by Enescu (Le Veilleur) in Toulouse, Pelléas et Mélisande (Arkël) and Samson (Old Hebrew) in Teatro Amazonas in Manaus (Brasil). Last season he appeared in two productions of Opéra Comique in Paris: Fortunio by Messager and Béatrice et Bénédict by Berlioz. He was Nourabad in Les Pêcheurs de Perles in Moscow, he participated in the World Premiere in France of Whuthering Heights in Montpellier, and sung the role of Brander in Damnation de Faust in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Arkël in Rouen. He just made his debut in the role of Marcel in Les Huguenots in Brussels, and participated to the revival of the Robert Wilson’s production of Pelléas et Mélisande in Opéra de Paris conducted by Philippe Jordan.

Jérôme Varnier is particularly sought as an interpreter of French art song and has appeared at Opéra Bastille, Salle Favart, the National Library of France in Paris, and at Opéra de Lyon and Opéra de Bordeaux, with pianists Ruben Lifschitz, Fabrice Boulanger, Jean-Marc Fontana, Jean-Louis Haguenauer and Alexandre Tharaud.
