Born in Barcelona, Joan Martín-Royo studied piano, violin, bassoon and composition at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu and also gained a degree in History of Art from the University of Barcelona. He has maintained his vocal studies with soprano Mercè Punti and has received awards at several prestigious singing contests including the Third Male Prize, the Mozart Prize and the Placido Domingo Prize at the 2003 Francisco Viñas Competition. Joan Martín-Royo is quickly building his opera repertoire around Rossini and Mozart roles: Lord Sidney (Il Viaggio a Reims) at La Monnaie and Don Profondo (in the same work) for Ópera de Oviedo; Dandini (La Cenerentola) for Glyndebourne on Tour and Macrobio (La Pietra del Paragone) at the Théâtre du Châtelet and Teatro Regio di Parma (recorded for DVD). He has sung Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) at the Gran Teatro Liceu and Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and Palacio de las Artes (Valencia), Masetto (Don Giovanni) for Opéra de Monte Carlo and Ópera de Oviedo, Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) at the Ópera de Santiago (Chile) and for Ópera de Oviedo. Other roles include Albert (Werther) in Las Palmas, Lescaut (Manon) at the Liceu, Ned Keene (Peter Grimes) in Santiago and Don Quijote (El Retablo de Maese Pedro) at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He created the title role of Xavier Benguerel’s "Yo, Dalí" at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid and also at the Liceu Opera House Barcelona (2011). On the concert platform he has enjoyed appearances with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Al Ayre Español, Ensemble Matheus, Nederlands Radio Kamer Filharmonie, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra or the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington). Joan Martín-Royo has performed Aeneas (Dido & Aeneas) in the Barcelona Early Music Festival and Adonis (in Blow’s Venus & Adonis) at the Festival d’Òpera de Butxaca. Recent engagements include his US début singing "Messiah" with the National Symphony Orchestra / Rinaldo Alessandrini, Mendelssohn "Die Erste Walpurgisnacht" in Mallorca with Victor Pablo Pérez, Haydn "Die Schöpfung" with the Orchestra of Cannes Provence-Alpes-Côte D’Azure / Philippe Bender, Christus (St Matthew Passion) with Al Ayre Español/ Eduardo Lopez Banzo and Fauré's "Requiem" at the Festival de Músiques Religioses i del Món de Girona / John Rutter. A keen recitalist, Martín-Royo has collaborated with distinguished accompanists such as Helmut Deutsch, Dalton Baldwin, Norman Shetler, Roger Vignoles and Pierre Réach performing Schubert, Wolf, Beethoven, Ibert, Ravel, Poulenc and Montsalvatge. He has recorded "Ànima", a disc of opera arias with the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu / Josep Vicent, Albert García Demestres' "Mariana en Sombras" and "Aprima’t en 3 dies" with Conjunt XXI / Miquel Ortega. Naïve released a DVD of Rossini's "La pietra del paragone" at Théâtre du Châtelet (under Jean-Christophe Spinosi). The 11/12 season includes "Yo, Dali", Figaro (in Le Nozze di Figaro)and Papageno (all three roles at the Liceu Barcelona) as well as Rodomonte (Haydn's "Orlando Paladino") at the Théâtre du Châtelet, J.S. Bach's "St. John Passion" (Théâtre des Champs Elysées), De Falla´s "El retablo de Maese Pedro" (Toulouse)our and the première in contemporary era of Carnicer's "Cristoforo Colombo" (performing the title role) at the Teatro de la Maestranza, Sevilla.
