Johann Sebastian Bach is sometimes called 'the fifth evangelist' because of the more than two hundred preserved ecclesiastical cantatas. But Bach also wrote a number of secular cantatas, sometimes with a frivolous and comic subject, such as the Kaffeekantate and the Bauernkantate. Still other cantatas were intended for professors or city administrators of Leipzig or for the decoration of an annual fair. The Netherlands Bach Society presents two such graphic works here, based on examples from Greek mythology and then called dramma per musica (a kind of mini-opera). They are staged here surprisingly vividly. In this way, the world-famous Lutheran cantor posthumously becomes a gifted opera composer.
