Aus halb Europa hat man sich aufgemacht, um an den Krönungsfeierlichkeiten für Charles X. in Reims teilzunehmen. In einem Hotel in der französischen Provinz warten ein Engländer, eine Polin, ein Spanier, ein Deutscher, Italiener, Franzosen und last but not least eine Tirolerin ungeduldig auf ihre Weiterreise. Hier stoßen nicht nur nationale Eigenarten aufeinander, sondern es entspinnen sich auch amouröse Affären und eitle Animositäten und alle stehen immer am Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs.

Dass Gioacchino Rossini ein wahrer Meister des musikalischen Komödientheaters ist, zeigt er auch in dieser 1825 komponierten Oper, die er tatsächlich anlässlich der Krönung Charles X. komponierte. Laut des Rossini-Biographen Richard Osborne ist diese Oper „eines der verrücktesten und erheiterndsten Unterhaltungsstücke, die je aus der Feder eines Opernkomponisten geflossen sind.“

Auch musikalisch nimmt das Werk eine einmalige Stellung ein. Rossini komponierte es für die zehn besten Sängerinnen und Sänger seiner Zeit, die hier Beweise ihrer vokalen Virtuosität demonstrieren konnten. Die Reise nach Reims bietet ein wahres Belcanto-Feuerwerk und die Vorlage für höchst amüsante europäische Begegnungen.

Sensational find on the Lower Rhine! A team of archaeological experts has recovered a 19th century carriage containing numerous living people. According to their statements, they were on their way to Reims , where they wanted to take part in the coronation celebrations of King Charles X. With the help of a time machine, the people stranded today are supposed to be transported back to their era, but some of them seem to like it better in the modern world...

Gioachino Rossini, the master of opera buffa, actually composed The Journey to Reims as a homage opera to Charles X, who was crowned King of France in Reims Cathedral in 1825. It is less of a story opera and more of a cantata in which he composed highly virtuoso arias and ensembles tailored to the best singers of his time. After only a few performances, Rossini withdrew the work. It was not until 1984 that Il viaggio a Reims was performed again for the first time at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro.

The cast features no fewer than 20 solo roles, which will offer true bel canto fireworks. Director Jan Eßinger and designer Benita Roth invite the audience on a highly amusing journey through time that takes place on the Lower Rhine.
