Wagner's "Faust Overture" - inspired by Berlioz' "Roméo et Juliette" symphony and Beethoven's Ninth - opens this concert with dark pathos. The epitome of the romantic piano concerto with Elisabeth Leonskaja as the soloist follows directly from the time of its composition in the early 1840s: Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, in which the composer strives for the aesthetic ideal of the close interlocking of piano and orchestra. The second half of the concert draws a line into the modern with the second symphony by Heinz Winbeck (1946-2019), which premiered in 1987 under the baton of Dennis Russell Davies. For Davies, Winbeck's five symphonies are a "logical and honest continuation of the thoughts and traditions of Bruckner and Mahler".

Mit dunklem Pathos eröffnet Wagners „Faust-Ouvertüre“ – inspiriert von Berlioz’ „Roméo et Juliette“-Symphonie und Beethovens Neunter – dieses Konzert. An die Entstehungszeit zu Beginn der 1840er-Jahre unmittelbar anknüpfend folgt der Inbegriff des romantischen Klavierkonzertes mit Elisabeth Leonskaja als Solistin: Schumanns Klavierkonzert a-Moll, in dem der Komponist nach dem ästhetischen Ideal der engen Verzahnung von Klavier und Orchester strebt. Die zweite Konzerthälfte schlägt den Bogen in die Moderne mit der zweiten Symphonie von Heinz Winbeck (1946-2019), die 1987 unter der Leitung von Dennis Russell Davies uraufgeführt wurde. Für Davies sind die fünf Symphonien Winbecks eine „logische und ehrliche Fortsetzung der Gedanken und Traditionen Bruckners und Mahlers“. Ganz in diesem Sinne erweckt Winbeck die symphonische Gattung voller Einfallsreichtum, Wahrhaftigkeit und moderner Kontraste zu neuem Leben.
