"It's pure love and your heart opens up," said friend and colleague Antonín Dvořák about the beauties of the shortest of Johannes Brahms' four symphonies. Since its premiere in 1883, the Hanseatic Symphony No. 3 has regularly triggered storms of enthusiasm. Right at the beginning of the composition, Brahms quotes a motto that he often used in his youth to express his lack of commitment: "Free, but happy". The work of the artist, who remained unmarried throughout his life, awaits in this concert a wedding from 1923 as a kind of musical answer from the modern age: Igor Stravinsky's "Les Noces". „Es ist lauter Liebe und das Herz geht einem dabei auf“, äußerte Freund und Kollege Antonín Dvořák über die Schönheiten der kürzesten der vier Symphonien von Johannes Brahms. Seit ihrer Uraufführung 1883 löst die 3. Symphonie des Hanseaten regelmäßig Begeisterungsstürme aus. Gleich zu Beginn der Komposition zitiert Brahms ein Motto, das er in seiner Jugend vielfach als Ausdruck seiner Bindungslosigkeit verwendete: „Frei, aber froh“. Das Werk des zeitlebens unverheiratet gebliebenen Künstlers erwartet in diesem Konzert gewissermaßen als musikalische Antwort aus der Moderne eine Hochzeit aus dem Jahr 1923: Igor Strawinskys „Les Noces“. Als Tanzkantate oder Ballett mit Gesang setzte Strawinsky die vier Tableaus einer russischen Bauernhochzeit für Gesangsquartett, Chor, vier Klaviere und umfangreiches Streichwerk in Musik.
