At the crossroads.

The sorceress Alcina has already drawn many men under the spell of her magic, not being stingy with her (musical) charms, she ignites one after another (melodic) fireworks from the lust for feeling. Quite different from Ruggiero, who got lost on the island of the sorceress and succumbs to her seduction. The fate of his predecessors also threatens him never to leave the island of Alcinas again; if it weren't for his fiancée, who is trying to win him back and thus save him. Now "Alcina" is far more than the vicious, lustful title heroine and a story of an affair that is enriched with magic; Soon two worlds face each other: the colorless, down-to-earth world of Bradamante and the sensual, erotic world of Alcina. First performed in 1735, one is only too happy to attest Handel's opera a ghostly, dusty life of an antique - but far from it. "Alcina" is about the struggle between rational morality and the pleasure of the (unique) moment. How much order do people need, how much freedom can they tolerate? Questions that could hardly be more topical.

Viele Männer zog die Zauberin Alcina bereits in den Bann ihrer Magie, nicht geizend mit ihren (musikalischen) Reizen entzündet sie ein ums andere Mal ein (melodisches) Feuerwerk aus der Lust am Gefühl. Ganz anders als Ruggiero, der sich auf die Insel der Zauberin verirrte und ihrer Verführung erliegt. Auch ihm droht das Schicksal seiner Vorgänger, die Insel Alcinas nie wieder zu verlassen; wäre da nicht seine Verlobte, die ihn zurückgewinnen und damit zu retten versucht. Nun ist »Alcina« weit mehr als die lasterhaft-lustvolle Titelheldin und eine mit Magie angereicherte Geschichte eines Seitensprungs; schon bald stehen sich zwei Welten gegenüber: Die farblos-bodenständige Welt Bradamantes und die sinnlich-erotische Welt Alcinas. 1735 uraufgeführt, attestiert man Händels Oper nur allzu gern ein geisterhaft verstaubtes Leben einer Antiquität – doch weit gefehlt. In »Alcina« geht es um das Ringen zwischen vernunftorientierter Moral und die Lustbarkeit des (einzigartigen) Moments. Wie viel Ordnung braucht der Mensch, wie viel Freiheit erträgt er? Fragen, die aktueller kaum sein könnten.
