Kantáty Johanna Sebastiana Bacha představují bohatství, jaké nemá v historii evropské hudby obdoby. Více než dvě stě děl plných melodické invence, mistrovské polyfonie, působivých sborů a dojímavých árií dodnes poskytují radost, inspiraci i příležitost ke kontemplaci hudebníkům i posluchačům po celém světě. Na Pražské jaro nyní přijíždí jedna z největších bachovských autorit, Ton Koopman, aby se svými soubory – Amsterdamským barokním orchestrem a sborem – uvedl tři z nich.

Jen těžko bychom na světě hledali osobnost, která je s kantátami Johanna Sebastiana Bacha spojena více než Ton Koopman. Rodák z nizozemského Zwolle byl prvním dirigentem, který natočil jejich komplet, a to včetně jedenadvaceti kantát světských. Mimořádný počin, na kterém Koopman s Amsterdamským barokním orchestrem a sborem pracoval v letech 1995–2005, čítá úctyhodných 67 alb. Získal za ně prestižní ceny Echo Klassik, BBC Music Magazine Award, Hector Berlioz Prize a byl nominován na ceny Grammy a cenu časopisu Gramophone. Jako dirigent, varhaník a cembalista má Koopman na kontě neuvěřitelných 400 nahrávek.

Těžiště jeho aktivit leží v práci s Amsterdamským barokním orchestrem, který založil v roce 1979, v roce 1992 k němu přiřadil ještě Amsterdamský barokní sbor. Obě tělesa dnes patří mezi nejslavnější soubory světa historicky poučené interpretace a pravidelně koncertují na prestižních pódiích. Koopman však vystupuje také s těmi nejlepšími „moderními“ symfonickými orchestry, které si jej zvou, aby i v práci s nimi uplatňoval své znalosti historické praxe. Dirigoval tak třeba Berlínské filharmoniky, Royal Concertgebouw, Newyorskou filharmonii či Chicago Symphony. Krom toho je emeritním profesorem univerzity v Leidenu a Královské konzervatoře v Haagu, čestným členem londýnské Royal Academy of Music a prezidentem Bachova archivu v Lipsku.

Program koncertu ve Dvořákově síni Rudolfina zahájí radostná vánoční kantáta Unser Mund sei voll Lachens BWV 110 (Naše ústa nechť jsou plna úsměvů), ve které Bach využil hudbu ze své Orchestrální suita D dur a poprvé zazněla na Hod boží roku 1725 v Lipsku. Následovat bude Herr Jesu Christ, wahr’ Mensch und Gott BWV 127 (Ježíš Kristus, člověk a Bůh), chorální kantáta založená na hymnu Paula Ebera. Večer vyvrcholí světskou kantátou Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten BWV 207 (Vzhůru zní tóny radostných trubek), složenou u příležitosti jmenin saského kurfiřta Friedricha Augusta II.

The cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach reflect a richness of culture that has no parallel in European musical history: More than two hundred works filled with melodic invention, masterful polyphony, stirring choral writing and poignant arias which, to this day, continue to bring joy, inspiration and an occasion for reflection to musicians and audiences all over the world. The Prague Spring will this year host Ton Koopman, one of the greatest authorities on Bach who, together with his ensembles, will present three works in the genre.
It would be difficult to find an artist who is more closely associated with the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach than Ton Koopman. Born in the Dutch city of Zwolle, he was the first conductor to record the complete cycle of all the cantatas, including 21 secular cantatas. This extraordinary project, which Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir worked on from 1995 to 2005, gave rise to an impressive 67 albums. For this feat he won the prestigious Echo Klassik, the BBC Music Magazine Award and the Hector Berlioz Prize, and he was nominated for a Grammy and Gramophone Award as well. In his role as conductor, organist and harpsichordist, Koopman has made an incredible 400 recordings.

The focus of his activities lies in his collaboration with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, which he established in 1979, and the Amsterdam Baroque Choir, which followed in 1992. Both ensembles are celebrated internationally in the field of historically informed interpretation and they regularly perform in prestigious concert venues. Koopman also appears with some of the finest “modern” symphony orchestras, who invite him to work with them and appreciate the opportunity to draw on his knowledge of period performance. These include the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, the New York Philharmonic or the Chicago Symphony. In addition, he is Professor Emeritus at the University of Leiden and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Honorary Member of London’s Royal Academy of Music, and President of the Leipzig Bach Archive Foundation.

The programme for the concert in the Rudolfinum’s Dvořák Hall will begin with the joyful Christmas cantata Unser Mund sei voll Lachens BWV 110 (May our mouths be filled with laughter), in which Bach used music from his Orchestral Suite in D major; it was first performed in Leipzig on Christmas Day, 1725. This will be followed by Herr Jesu Christ, wahr’ Mensch und Gott BWV 127 (Lord Jesus Christ, true Man and God), a chorale cantata based on a hymn by Paul Eber. The evening will culminate in the secular cantata Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten BWV 207 (Come, resounding tones of merry trumpets), written to mark the name day of the Elector of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II.
