Ein packender Musiktheater-Thriller, der sich brandaktuellen gesellschaftlichen Themen widmet: Am Salzburger Landestheater kommt Stuart MacRaes Oper nach der Uraufführung 2019 in Schottland zu ihrer österreichischen Erstaufführung.

Auf einer Expedition am Polarkreis wird das Forschungsschiff „Anthropocene“ vom ewigen Eis eingeschlossen. Die Isolation und die drohende Todesgefahr sorgen für Spannungen im Forschungsteam, Beziehungen werden auf eine harte Probe gestellt. Doch alles ändert sich, als das Wissenschaftsteam plötzlich ein in der unwirtlichen Eiswüste eingefrorenes Lebewesen entdeckt …

Das Anthropozän ist das Erdzeitalter, in dem wir Menschen zum wichtigsten Einflussfaktor für die gesamte Welt geworden sind. In unserer Suche nach immer neuen Erkenntnissen, Technologien, Erfindungen und Utopien begeben wir uns bis an die entlegensten Orte der Erde. Doch was erwartet uns dort? Das Libretto von Louise Welsh wird durch die dichte, starke Tonsprache des schottischen Komponisten Stuart MacRae verstärkt, in der Dissonanz und Melodie gegeneinander antreten. Nach der Uraufführung an der Scottish Opera konstatierte die Presse begeistert „packende, dramatische Spannung und superbe dramatische Handlungsführung“.

Stuart MacRae (*1976) gilt als einer der interessantesten zeitgenössischen Komponisten. Er komponierte für London Sinfonietta und BBC Proms und wurde „Composer-in-residence“ beim BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. „Anthropozän“ ist seine vierte Zusammenarbeit mit Librettistin Louise Welsh, die sich auch als Krimiautorin einen Namen gemacht hat.

The “Anthropocene” is the geological era marked by humanity as the dominating influence on the entire world. In our quest for new knowledge, technologies, inventions and utopias we are travelling to the ends of the earth. But what is awaiting us there? The libretto by Louise Welsh is further intensified by the dense, powerful musical language of Scottish composer Stuart MacRae, in which dissonances and melody compete. After its world premiere at the Scottish Opera, press reviews enthusiastically praised its “gripping dramatic suspense and superb dramaturgic plot.” Stuart MacRae (*1976) is often cited among the most interesting contemporary composers. He has composed music for the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Proms and was Composer-in-Association at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. “Anthropocene” is his fourth collaboration with librettist Louise Welsh, who has made a name for herself as a writer of mystery thrillers.
