Loan to the Schwetzingen SWR Festival and the Staatstheater Mainz About the work: The myth is well known: In order to rob the Golden Fleece from Colchis, the legendary ship Argo sets sail under the leadership of Jason. On board 50 heroes including Orpheus and the lesser known Butes. When the sirens want to subdue the Argonauts with their song, Orpheus protects the men with his own song. Only Butes - magically attracted by the sounds - throws himself into the sea. Jumping into the water as an image for the search for the unknown, which includes failure and even one's own death. For Sánchez-Verdú, antiquity and the history of the Mediterranean as a temporal and geographical space are always points of reference for his compositions: Mare nostrum, the Mediterranean – an ambivalent place, on the one hand a space of search, of setting out for new shores, and on the other hand up to the present Symbol for catastrophes, wars and death. As is often the case in his works, Sánchez-Verdú includes the space in his composition. He is concerned with absorbing the movement of travel, the sea in its mobility in poetic concentration. An essential part of the musical and scenic concept is the live electronics, which will expand the sound of the room and keep the listeners moving as auditory ship travelers.
