The opera Armide is the last collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Lully and the lyricist Philippe Quinault and is also considered to be one of their most successful. Quinault used material from Torquato Tasso's epic La Gerusalemme liberata for this: Armide, the niece of King Hidraot of Damascus, has magical powers that she successfully uses in the fight against the enemy crusader army. However, against her will, she falls in love with the knight Renaud. At first she manages to ensnare him, but his friends are able to release him from the love spell. Humiliated and desperate, Armide destroys her palace and chases away through the air on a chariot.
