En contrepoint de l’exposition que la Philharmonie de Paris consacre au Métal et à la culture de ce genre musical, l’Ensemble intercontemporain décline ce que cette attitude « raconte » aux compositeurs d’aujourd’hui. Le heavy metal inspire au jeune Bastien David un riff endiablé (et augmenté) pour un instrument qu’on associe pourtant peu avec à ce genre musical : le violoncelle, accompagné pour l’occasion d’une batterie. Art of Metal III est le troisième volet du cycle de Yann Robin autour de la clarinette contrebasse métal, inventée et jouée par Alain Billard : le « metal » est tout à la fois la matière dans laquelle est fait l’instrument (et son bec) et la source d’inspiration de son jeu saturé, démultiplié par l’électronique Ircam et l’Ensemble. Enfin, la Scandinavie est un creuset bouillonnant pour le heavy metal, comme en témoigne la création exceptionnelle de la compositrice et contrebassiste islandaise Bára Gísladóttir.

In counterpoint to the exhibition at the Philharmonie de Paris devoted to heavy metal and the culture of this musical genre, the Ensemble intercontemporain explores what this attitude " says" to today's composers. Heavy metal inspires the young Bastien David to create a wild (and augmented) riff for an instrument not often associated with this musical genre—the cello—accompanied for the occasion by a drum kit. Art of Metal III is the third part of Yann Robin's series on the metal contrabass clarinet, invented and played by Alain Billard. "Metal" is both the material from which the instrument (and its mouthpiece) is made, and the source of inspiration for his saturated playing, multiplied by IRCAM electronics and the ensemble. Finally, Scandinavia is a hotbed of heavy metal, as demonstrated by the exceptional work of Icelandic composer and double bassist Bára Gísladóttir.
