People cornered by crisis who look for better alternatives: in the current, tense era, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny seems more relevant than ever. With his libretto for this opera, playwright Bertolt Brecht was doing what he did best: writing socially relevant theater that denounced the capitalist consumer society of the 1930s. With Kurt Weill's swirling composition, which combines a classical composition style with jazzy sounds, and Brecht's innovative theater techniques, the well-known musical theater duo broke open the opera genre.

Door crisis in het nauw gedreven mensen die op zoek gaan naar betere alternatieven: in het huidige, gespannen tijdsgewricht lijkt Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny relevanter dan ooit. Met zijn libretto voor deze opera deed toneelschrijver Bertolt Brecht waar hij goed in was: maatschappelijk relevant theater schrijven dat de kapitalistische consumptiemaatschappij van de jaren ’30 aan de kaak stelt. Met Kurt Weills wervelende compositie, die een klassieke compositiestijl met jazzy klanken combineert, en Brechts vernieuwende theatertechnieken brak het bekende muziektheaterduo het operagenre open.
