In 1930 Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht created a new type of grand opera, radical in both, entertainment as well as criticism. With the wit of an epic theater and the musical esprit of old and worn bar songs mixed with music of the avant-garde, Weill and Brecht built the fable of a city in paradise that finally perishes from its own utopias: in the end there is only one mortal sin left—the sin of insolvency. Together with a young ensemble, director Ulrike Schwab explores the one question: Who would still dare to dream of a better future today.
"You get gold more easily from men than from rivers," says Widow Begbick, head of the Mahagonny town-founding trio. But before the commitment to limitless consumption, wasn't it a utopia to hammer a stake into the ground somewhere in the middle of nowhere and say: "Here is paradise now."? As in Wagner's Ring , the story is about the rise and fall of the city of Mahagonnyat the beginning about great thoughts of a morning shining in golden light. But who makes sure that there is heaven and not hell on earth in Neuland? Kurt Weill's and Bertolt Brecht's opera focuses on the city and practical constraints. Director Ulrike Schwab and her team are interested in the people who would try to live here today: Where should a radical affirmation of a new beginning come from when all utopias have been lived before without achieving their goals? As with Wagner, the world must perish - just without a metaphysics of salvation. Ironically, the fortune hunter Jimmy, who declares bankruptcy a mortal sin, becomes the first victim of his own law (Wotan waves somewhere in the background). the search for status, Love and the ability to shape the world leads along learned structures and a hurricane, which makes a last detour around the city and its trembling residents, to the big question of the present: Who still dares to dream of a better future? 1930 schufen Kurt Weill und Bertolt Brecht einen neuen Typus der großen Oper, radikal in Unterhaltsamkeit wie auch Kritik. Mit dem Witz des epischen Theaters, dem musikalischen Esprit von schrammeligen Kneipensongs und Musik der Avantgarde bauten sie die Fabel einer an den eigenen Utopien zugrunde gehenden Paradiesstadt, in der es nur noch eine Todsünde gibt – die Zahlungsunfähigkeit. Regisseurin Ulrike Schwab untersucht mit einem jungen Ensemble, wer es heute überhaupt noch wagen würde, von einer besseren Zukunft zu träumen.
„Ihr bekommt leichter das Gold von Männern als von Flüssen“, sagt die Witwe Begbick, Kopf des Stadtgründungstrios von Mahagonny. Aber lag nicht vor dem Bekenntnis zum grenzenlosen Konsum mal eine Utopie darin, irgendwo im Nirgendwo einen Pflock in die Erde zu hauen und zu sagen: „Hier ist jetzt das Paradies.“? Wie auch in Wagners Ring geht es in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny am Anfang um große Gedanken von einem in goldenem Licht leuchtenden Morgen. Doch wer sorgt dafür, dass es im Neuland den Himmel und nicht die Hölle auf Erden gibt? Kurt Weills und Bertolt Brechts Oper stellt Stadt und Sachzwänge in den Mittelpunkt. Regisseurin Ulrike Schwab und ihr Team interessieren sich für die Menschen, die hier heute zu leben versuchen würden: Woher sollte eine radikale Bejahung des Neuanfangs kommen, wenn sämtliche Utopien schon einmal ohne Erreichung ihrer Ziele gelebt worden sind? Wie bei Wagner muss die Welt zugrunde gehen – nur eben ohne Erlösungsmetaphysik. Ausgerechnet der Glücksritter Jimmy, der die Pleite zur Todsünde erklärt, wird das erste Opfer seines eigenen Gesetzes (irgendwo im Hintergrund winkt Wotan). Die Suche nach Status, Liebe und Gestaltbarkeit der Welt führt entlang gelernter Strukturen und eines Hurrikans, der einen letzten Bogen um die Stadt und ihre bibbernden Bewohner*innen macht, zur großen Frage der Gegenwart: Wer wagt noch, von einer besseren Zukunft zu träumen? GMD Cornelius Meister führt durch Weills schillerndes Panorama populärer wie auch avantgardistischer Musikstile der Weimarer Republik: zwischen schrammeligen Songs direkt aus der Kneipe, Operettenschlagern, Blues, barocker Passionsmusik und Opern-Finali, wie Verdi sie nicht mit größerer Grandezza hätte schreiben können. Die jungen Stimmen unseres Ensembles versprechen eine Reihe spannender Rollendebüts.
