Brahms' Troostrijke Requiem: Symphony in B Minor, D. 759 ("Unfinished") Schubert (+1 More)

‘Since Bach’s Mass in B minor and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, nothing more has been written in this field that can match up to this Deutsches Requiem.’ Such exultant words were already being written about Johannes Brahms’ breakthrough at the time of its composition. Equally full of praise were reviews of Philippe Herreweghe’s recording of the requiem in 2008: ‘(his) inborn feeling for the musical lines (…) is clear throughout as he sculpts this work.’ More than fifteen years after Herreweghe sequestered himself in the studio with the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, he now presents the imposing and deeply human composition on the stage of the Blue Hall together with the unsurpassed Collegium Vocale Gent. After all this time on the rostrum, it goes without saying that this unique liturgical work - with texts in German and not in the expected Latin - seems tailor-made for Herreweghe.

« Depuis la Messe en si mineur de Bach et la Missa solemnis de Beethoven, plus rien n'a été écrit dans ce domaine qui égale ce Deutsches Requiem. » C'est en ces termes dithyrambiques que la critique a accueilli à l'époque la composition qui a fait la renommée de Johannes Brahms. Des éloges pas moins flatteurs ont salué l'enregistrement de la messe des morts par Philippe Herreweghe en 2008 : « [son] sens inné des lignes musicales […] est manifeste à tout moment, tandis qu'il sculpte l'œuvre. » Plus de quinze ans après être entré en studio avec l'Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Herreweghe dirige la composition imposante et profondément humaine dans notre Salle Bleue, aux côtés du fameux Collegium Vocale de Gand. Faut-il encore souligner que l'œuvre liturgique singulière – en allemand plutôt qu'en latin, comme on s'y attendrait – est taillée sur mesure pour le grand chef ?

Minstens even lovend waren recensenten over Philippe Herreweghes opname van de dodenmis in 2008: ‘(zijn) aangeboren gevoel voor de muzikale lijnen (…) is overal duidelijk wanneer hij dit werk boetseert.’ Meer dan vijftien jaar nadat Herreweghe met het Orchestre des Champs-Élysées in de studio dook, brengt hij de imposante en diepmenselijke compositie nu op het podium van de Blauwe zaal samen met het onvolprezen Collegium Vocale uit Gent. Dat dit unieke liturgische werk - met teksten in het Duits en niet in het verwachte Latijn - op maat gemaakt lijkt voor Herreweghe, hoeft na al die tijd op de bok geen betoog.
