Throughout its stage life (a little less than a century and a half: this year marks the 140th anniversary of its premiere), “Carmen” has managed to be a naturalistic drama, a colorful canvas on ethnographic themes, a lush “grand opera” and an almost mysterious tragedy of the passions. And the heroine herself became either a symbol of the struggle for freedom or the embodiment of eternal femininity, easily transforming from savage to aristocrat, from femme fatale to hooligan. For an opera singer, this bright role is the same as the role of Hamlet for a drama actor: everyone dreams of singing Carmen. It is not without reason that almost immediately, unable to come to terms with the fact that such a gift went to the mezzo-soprano voices, the sopranos also began to claim their rights to this part.
Georges Bizet received an order for a new opera from the directors of the Opéra Comique theater, Camille du Locle and Adolphe de Leuven, in 1872, almost immediately after his “Djamila” failed in this very theater. Bizet rejected several plots proposed by the management, and together with librettists Henri Meillac and Louis Halévy chose Mérimée's short story. Which, by the way, horrified de Leuven: “Death on the stage of the Opéra Comique is unthinkable!” .

There was even an idea to turn the finale into a happy ending - to marry Carmen to Escamillo. But Bizet was actively against it. Halévy later recalled: “I insisted and explained that it would be a completely different kind of Carmen, and that we introduced characters into the play that were completely consistent with the traditions of comic opera, a young girl who was completely chaste <...> true, there are gypsies, but these are comic gypsies , and death, inevitable for the denouement, will occur at the end of a very lively and brilliant act with processions, ballet and cheerfully playing trumpets.”

The authors faced another difficulty - the singers refused the role of Carmen: some did not want to die on stage, while others considered the image of the heroine obscene. Finally, the role was offered to Celestine Galli-Marie, who was destined to become the very first Carmen.

In the summer of 1874 the opera was completed. Rehearsals began - the orchestra members complained about the complexity of the score, the male choir refused to fight, the female choir refused to smoke cigars, and du Locle constantly demanded alterations.

The premiere took place on March 3, 1875. According to Halévy, “After the curtain closed, only two or three of Bizet’s faithful friends remained in the hall . ”

And the critics, it seems, have entered into a competition for the best negative review:

“Madame Galli-Marie has gone overboard with the depiction of the disgusting behavior of this monster, her gestures reek of vice, her hoarse voice is at times so vulgar and ugly that you lose the desire to see the artist and hear the singer. If this is called dramatic truth, we sympathize with the performer who has fallen into this trap.”

“This opera should have been called “Love with Castanets,” their sound is so intrusive and unbearable, constantly appearing at the most inopportune moments. Ever since I heard the music of “Carmen,” my ears, nose and jaws have turned into castanets and produce that clattering sound so dear to the Spanish heart.”

“Modest mothers, respectable fathers of the family! With faith in tradition, you brought your daughters and wives to provide them with a decent, dignified evening's entertainment. What did you feel at the sight of this prostitute who passes from the arms of a mule driver to a dragoon, from a dragoon to a bullfighter, until the dagger of a deserted lover ends her shameful life?

Nevertheless, the opera ran for forty-eight performances throughout the year. And the composer did not live long enough to see the beginning of her enchanting success on the world opera stage. Vienna was the first to “submit”, where the premiere took place in October of the same year. Then came Brussels, Budapest, London, St. Petersburg, New York, Stockholm - and everywhere “Carmen” was greeted with applause.

The Bolshoi Theater delayed a little: the first production was carried out only in 1898, but then it did not part with it for a long time. In total, Carmen was staged at the Bolshoi eight times, including in 1943 in Kuibyshev (now Samara), where the theater was evacuated, and in 1945 in Moscow - just a month after the Victory. The play by Rostislav Zakharov became a real long-liver, remaining in the repertoire for twenty-six years (1953-79) - during which time it was performed 430 times.

Over the years, the title role at the Bolshoi was sung by unique, great artists - Vera Petrova-Zvantseva, Concordia Antarova, Nadezhda Obukhova, Bronislava Zlatogorova, Maria Maksakova, Vera Davydova, Veronika Borisenko, Irina Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Tamara Sinyavskaya...

The ninth production of “Carmen” was worked on by the famous theater director, chief director of the Russian Academic Youth Theater, which is located next to the Bolshoi on Theater Square, Alexey Borodin and his constant collaborator, set designer Stanislav Benediktov. The costumes were born from the imagination of Valentina Komolova. The lighting score was created by Damir Ismagilov. And the dances were choreographed by Spanish dancers and choreographers, famous flamenco performers Rosario and Ricardo Castro.

The opera was staged by music director and chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theater Tugan Sokhiev.

А сама героиня становилась то символом борьбы за свободу, то воплощением вечной женственности, с легкостью преображаясь из дикарки в аристократку, из роковой женщины в хулиганку. Для оперной певицы эта яркая партия все равно, что роль Гамлета для актера драмы: любая мечтает спеть Кармен. Недаром практически сразу, не в силах смириться с тем, что такой подарок достался голосам меццо-сопрано, сопрано тоже стали заявлять свои права на эту партию.
Заказ на новую оперу Жорж Бизе получил от директоров театра Комическая опера (Opéra Comique) Камиля дю Локля и Адольфа де Левена в 1872 г., практически сразу после того, как в этом самом театре провалилась его «Джамиле». Бизе отверг несколько сюжетов, предложенных дирекцией, и вместе с либреттистами Анри Мельяком и Людовиком Галеви выбрал новеллу Мериме. Позже Галеви вспоминал: «Я настаивал и объяснял, что это будет совсем другого рода Кармен, и что мы ввели в пьесу персонажей, вполне соответствующих традициям комической оперы, молодую девушку вполне целомудренную <...> правда, имеются цыгане, но это комические цыгане, и смерть, неизбежная для развязки, произойдет в конце очень живого и блестящего акта с кортежами, с балетом и весело наигрывающими трубами».

Авторов ждала еще одна трудность — певицы отказывались от роли Кармен: кто-то не хотел умирать на сцене, а кто-то считал образ героини непристойным. Наконец, партию предложили Селестине Галли-Марье, которая и суждено было стать самой первой Кармен.

Летом 1874 г. опера была завершена. Начались репетиции — оркестранты жаловались на сложность партитуры, мужской хор отказывался драться, женский — курить сигары, а дю Локль постоянно требовал переделок.

Премьера состоялась 3 марта 1875 г. По словам Галеви, «После закрытия занавеса в зале оставалось только двое-трое верных друзей Бизе».

А критики, кажется, вступили в соревнование на лучший негативный отзыв:

«Мадам Галли-Марье перебрала с изображением омерзительного поведения этого чудовища, от ее жестов несет пороком, ее сипловатый голос временами столь пошл и безобразен, что пропадает желание видеть артистку и слышать певицу. Если это называется драматической правдой, мы сочувствуем исполнительнице, попавшей в эту ловушку».

«Эта опера должна была бы называться „Любовь с кастаньетами“, настолько навязчив и невыносим их звук, то и дело возникающий в самый неподходящий момент. С тех пор, как я услышал музыку „Кармен“, мои уши, нос и челюсти превратились в кастаньеты и производят это столь дорогое испанскому сердцу клацанье».

Тем не менее, в течение года опера выдержала сорок восемь представлений. И композитор не дожил совсем немного до начала ее феерического успеха на мировых оперных подмостках. Первой «покорилась» Вена, где премьера прошла в октябре того же года. Затем последовали Брюссель, Будапешт, Лондон, Санкт-Петербург, Нью-Йорк, Стокгольм — и везде «Кармен» встречали овациями.

Большой театр немного помешкал: первая постановка была осуществлена только в 1898 г., зато потом надолго с ней уже не расставался. Всего «Кармен» ставилась в Большом восемь раз, в том числе в 1943 г. в Куйбышеве (ныне Самара), где театр был в эвакуации, и в 1945 г. в Москве — всего через месяц после Победы. Настоящим долгожителем стал спектакль Ростислава Захарова, продержавшийся в репертуаре двадцать шесть лет (1953-79 гг.) — за это время он прошел 430 раз.

Заглавную партию в Большом в разные годы пели уникальные, великие артистки — Вера Петрова-Званцева, Конкордия Антарова, Надежда Обухова, Бронислава Златогорова, Мария Максакова, Вера Давыдова, Вероника Борисенко, Ирина Архипова, Елена Образцова, Тамара Синявская...

Над девятой постановкой «Кармен» работали известный театральный режиссер, главный режиссер Российского академического молодежного театра, что расположился рядом с Большим на Театральной площади, Алексей Бородин и его постоянный соавтор сценограф Станислав Бенедиктов. Костюмы рождены фантазией Валентины Комоловой. Световую партитуру создал Дамир Исмагилов. А танцы поставили испанские танцовщики и хореографы, прославленные исполнители фламенко Росарио и Рикардо Кастро.

Дирижером-постановщиком оперы выступил музыкальный руководитель и главный дирижер Большого театр Туган Сохиев.
