Pianist Yeol Eum Son - whose popularity in Korea rivals that of K-pop stars - makes her NACO debut performing the Mount Everest of music for piano and orchestra.
After leading volcanic performances of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring with us in 2017, Joana Carneiro returns to conduct music from the composer's fairy-tale ballet The Firebird.
Among Stravinsky's most dazzlingly cinematic scores, the Firebird Suite made its way to movie theaters around the world as part of Disney's visionary celebration of classical music, Fantasia 2000.
Already a living legend in Korea, pianist Yeol Eum Son makes her highly anticipated NACO debut performing the Mount Everest of music for piano and orchestra: Sergei Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto. A breathtaking work of raw emotion that moves between tender reflection and thunderous intensity, Prokofiev's concerto is the perfect vehicle for Son, who brings "power and passion, fireworks and drama aplenty" (Limelight) to every performance.

Igor Stravinsky's Firebird ballet has all the elements of your favourite fairy tales: enchanted gardens, brave heroes, ghoulish goblins, and good triumphing over evil. The orchestral suite Stravinsky extracted from his shimmering score journeys through six of the ballet's most mesmerizing scenes with music of spine-tingling suspense and radiant joy.

And to open the program, Portuguese conductor Joana Carneiro introduces us to Andreia Pinto Correia's Ciprés - a musical depiction of towering trees and calm water inspired by a Federico García Lorca poem.
