In 1852 Charles Gounod created one of the most famous works in music history: Méditation sur le 1er prelude de Bach - better known as Gounod's Ave Maria. The deeply religious Gounod composed mainly masses, oratorios, cantatas and operas. He celebrated his first stage success with his fourth opera, Faust, in 1859 - to this day it is his best-known composition of this genre.
In his first two operas, Sapho (1851) and Le médecin malgré lui (1858; The Doctor Against Will), Gounod showed his talent for creating new things with and through imitation and combination of older styles. He also used this technique in 1877 in the drama lyrique Cinq-Mars. The opera is primarily about the love affair between Princess Marie de Gonzague and Marquis de Cinq-Mars; Because of her, rather because she is supposed to marry the King of Poland, Cinq-Mars joins the conspirators against Cardinal Richelieu. The plot is exposed and Cinq-Mars imprisoned and sentenced to death. His confidante de Thou drafts a rescue plan for the following day, but his execution is brought forward so that there is no rescue for Cinq-Mars.


A cooperation with the Palazetto Bru Zane Venice

The Palazzetto Bru Zane - Center de musique romantique française - has set itself the task of helping French musical treasures of the 19th century (1780-1920) to regain their due charisma. It is based in Venice in a palazzetto from 1695 that the Bru Foundation has restored for its purposes. It combines artistic ambition with scientific claim in the humanistic spirit of the Bru Foundation.
