The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda

Konrad Junghänel and Cantus Cölln, two names who guarantee their beautiful interpretations, will perform a selection of the most beautiful madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi. 

The Madrigali Guerrieri ed Amorosi are among the most beautiful and intense music Claudio Monteverdi ever wrote. These madrigals, supplemented by others from books IV , VI , VIII and IX , form the basis of this performance. Director Geoffrey Layton, who was assistant to Peter Stein and Karl-Ernst Herrmann for many years and has been active as an independent director for some time now, manages to string these madrigals together into a fascinating dramatic whole with the battle between the sexes as the common thread. The highlight of this performance is undoubtedly Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Performers are the vocal and instrumental ensemble Cantus Cölln conducted by Konrad Junghänel, two names that guarantee a top-notch interpretation!
On the occasion of the première in Utrecht during the Early Music Festival, the Rotterdams Dagblad wrote: “Combattimenti is one of the most enchanting opera productions ever created in the Netherlands. While it's not even an opera. Because this is a scenic performance of eleven Monteverdi madrigals strung together. The way in which, in director Geoffrey Layton, nature - masterly lighting, bird sounds - influences the often sad, yet weightless situations is reminiscent of Karl-Ernst Hermann's best Brussels productions.”

Konrad Junghänel en Cantus Cölln, twee namen die garant staan voor hun prachtige vertolkingen, brengen een selectie van de mooiste madrigalen van Claudio Monteverdi. 

De Madrigali Guerrieri ed Amorosi behoren tot de mooiste en meest intense muziek die Claudio Monteverdi ooit schreef.  Deze madrigalen aangevuld met andere uit de boeken IV, VI, VIII en IX zijn het uitgangspunt van deze voorstelling. Regisseur Geoffrey Layton, die jarenlang assistent was van Peter Stein en Karl-Ernst Herrmann en sedert enige tijd actief is als zelfstandig regisseur, weet deze madrigalen aan elkaar te rijgen tot een boeiend dramatisch geheel met als rode draad de strijd tussen de seksen. Het hoogtepunt van deze voorstelling is ongetwijfeld Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Uitvoerders zijn het vocaal en instrumentaal ensemble Cantus Cölln onder leiding van Konrad Junghänel, twee namen die garant staan voor een vertolking van de bovenste plank!
Naar aanleiding van de première in Utrecht tijdens het Festival Oude Muziek schreef het Rotterdams Dagblad : “Combattimenti is een van de meest betoverende operaproducties, die ooit in Nederland tot stand zijn gekomen. Terwijl het niet eens om een opera gaat. Want dit is een scenische uitvoering van elf aaneengeregen madrigalen van Monteverdi. De manier waarop bij regisseur Geoffrey Layton de natuur  - meesterlijke belichting, vogelgeluiden - op de vaak droevige, maar toch gewichtloze situaties inwerkt herinnert aan Karl-Ernst Hermanns beste Brusselse producties.“
