Gemeinsam mit Katherine Duke, der Erick Hawkins Dance Company sowie dem Tänzer Edivaldo Ernesto und nach einem Open Call gecasteten Tänzer*innen beschließt das Ensemble Musikfabrik im Abschlusskonzert der MaerzMusik 2024 das zweiteilige Projekt „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ zum Schaffen von Lucia Dlugoszewski.

Der Abschluss des zweiteiligen Projekts „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ stellt auch das Finale der diesjährigen Ausgabe von MaerzMusik dar. Das Ensemble Musikfabrik findet gemeinsam mit Katherine Duke, Mitgliedern der Erick Hawkins Dance Company sowie dem Tänzer Edivaldo Ernesto und in Berlin ansässigen, nach einem Open Call der MaerzMusik gecasteten Tänzer*innen zusammen. Neben einem Auftragswerk der Komponistin Elena Rykova stehen unter anderem eine Neuauflage von „Space Is a Diamond“ aus dem Jahr 1970 für Solo-Trompete auf dem Programm, das tänzerisch von dem in Berlin lebenden Ernesto begleitet wird. Mit „Tender Theater Flight Nagerie“ aus dem Jahr 1978 für ein kleines Ensemble sowie „Disparate Stairway Radical Other“ aus dem Jahr 1995 werden darüber hinaus umfassendere Werke neu interpretiert beziehungsweise in Kollaboration zwischen dem Ensemble, Duke und Ernesto rekonstruiert und mit einer Adaption von „To Everybody Out There“ aus der Frühphase Dlugoszewskis kontrastiert.

„Contemplations into the Radical Others“ ist ein von MaerzMusik gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble Musikfabrik, der Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Katherine Duke und Agnese Toniutti lanciertes Rechercheprojekt zu Lucia Dlugoszewski. Nach einer ersten Ausgabe im Vorjahr wird die Auseinandersetzung mit der im Jahr 2000 verstorbenen Komponistin weiter vertieft. Die auch als Dichterin aktive Dlugoszewski studierte Ende der 1940er-Jahre bei Edgard Varèse, Grete Sultan und John Cage, beeindruckte Arnold Schönberg mit ihrem Klavierspiel und suchte in der Arbeit am präparierten Klavier nach Wegen, neue Klänge zu erschaffen. Daneben entwarf sie über hundert Instrumente, von denen einige für „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ von Musikfabrik-Mitglied Thomas Meixner rekonstruiert wurden. Dlugoszewskis Auseinandersetzung mit dem scheinbar Mondänen wie auch dem radikal Anderen setzte auf eine Unmittelbarkeit von Musik, hinter der sie als Komponistin buchstäblich verschwand. Dlugoszewski spielte bei Solo-Auftritten hinter einem Vorhang und betätigte sich hinter den Kulissen als Komponistin für die Choreografien der Erick Hawkins Dance Company. Ihr Werk wird in Kollaboration mit dem Kölner Ensemble Musikfabrik mit demselben Duktus in den Vordergrund gerückt, in dem sie es einst konzipierte: als Ausdruck der Freiheit von Klang, der wiederum dem Publikum Momente der Freiheit bieten sollte. Im zweiten Teil von „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ präsentiert das Ensemble einige ihrer Stücke erstmals in Europa, nachdem die Partituren aus vorhandenen Aufnahmen aufwendig rekonstruiert wurden. Neben einem Konzertabend mit der Musikfabrik, drei auf Dlugoszewski reagierende Auftragswerke sowie eines umfassenden Laboratoriums, in dem ihre Musik, ihr Klang und ihre Philosophie ausgiebig untersucht und diskutiert werden sollen, schließt dies Auftritte der Pianistin Toniutti sowie der Choreograf*innen Duke und Edivaldo Ernesto mit Mitgliedern der Erick Hawkins Dance Company und in Berlin ansässigen Tänzer*innen ein. Ebenso werden im Rahmen des Projekts drei Auftragswerke von Bethan Morgan-Williams, Mazyar Kashian und Elena Rykova aufgeführt, die künstlerisch auf Dlugoszewski antworten.

Joined by Katherine Duke, the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, dancer Edivaldo Ernesto and further dancers cast from an open call, Ensemble Musikfabrik concludes the two-part project “Contemplations into the Radical Others” on the work of Lucia Dlugoszewski for the closing concert of MaerzMusik 2024.

The conclusion of the two-part project “Contemplations into the Radical Others” also serves as the finale of this year’s edition of MaerzMusik. Ensemble Musikfabrik joins forces with Katherine Duke, members of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, dancer Edivaldo Ernesto and dancers based in Berlin who were selected following an open call by MaerzMusik. With “Tender Theater Flight Nagerie” from 1978 for a small ensemble and “Disparate Stairway Radical Other” from 1995, immersive works by Dlugoszewski will be reinterpreted or reconstructed in a collaboration by the ensemble, Duke and Ernesto and contrasted with an adaptation of “To Everybody Out There” from her early phase. This is rounded off by a commissioned work by composer Elena Rykova, created in response to “Space Is a Diamond” from 1970, dedicated to trumpeter Gerard Schwarz, deepening Dlugoszewski’s exploration of sound and space – accompanied by Ernesto, who lives in Berlin.

“Contemplations into the Radical Others” is a research project on Lucia Dlugoszewski launched by MaerzMusik with Ensemble Musikfabrik, the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Katherine Duke and Agnese Toniutti. After kicking off last year, the endeavour continues with a deeper exploration of the life and work of the composer, who died in 2000. Dlugoszewski, who was also active as a poet, studied with Edgard Varèse, Grete Sultan and John Cage in the late 1940s, impressed Arnold Schönberg with her piano playing and sought ways to create new sounds in her work on the prepared piano. She also designed over a hundred instruments, some of which have been reconstructed for “Contemplations into the Radical Others” by Musikfabrik member Thomas Meixner. Dlugoszewski’s exploration of the seemingly mundane as well as the radically different focussed on the immediacy of music. Not only did she work behind the scenes as a composer for the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, she often performed poetically on stage next to the dancers. In collaboration with the Cologne-based Ensemble Musikfabrik, her work is brought to the fore with the same style in which she originally conceived it: as an expression of the freedom of sound, which in turn is meant to offer the audience moments of freedom. The ensemble is now presenting some of its pieces for the first time in Europe after painstakingly reconstructing the scores from existing recordings. In addition to a concert evening with Musikfabrik, three commissioned works in response to Dlugoszewski and a comprehensive laboratory that will thoroughly examine and discuss her music, sound and philosophy, the second part of “Contemplations into the Radical Others”, features performances by pianist Toniutti and choreographers Duke and Edivaldo Ernesto with members of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company along with Berlin-based dancers. Three commissioned works by Bethan Morgan-Williams, Mazyar Kashian and Elena Rykova will also be performed as part of the project, offering an artistic response to Dlugoszewski.
