The final movement of Mahler's "Lied von der Erde" is almost as long as the five preceding movements taken together. Adorno interpreted it as the gaze of someone who can't look away. For the final concert, the Symphoniker Hamburg put the pieces of their great Mahler puzzle together. You can tell that this is music about the big questions, about life and death. It is full of mental images and sonic meditations. Daniel Behle and Michael Volle interpret the works as songs from the depths, while Sylvain Cambreling draws out the sensations of the chamber arrangement. A long goodbye.
