This time, too, an approach to the work, the composer and the production is offered in 90 minutes: State Opera director Bogdan Roščić speaks with the conductor of the new production, Bertrand de Billy, with the director Magdalena Fuchsberger and with other participants in the premiere, for example Nicole Car and Bernard Richter. The philosopher Konrad Paul Liessmann is also expected as a guest, with whom individual thematic areas of the opera will be discussed further. Of the three operas that Francis Poulenc created, his only full-length opera is based on a historical event from the »Grande Terreur« period in France: on July 12, 1794, 16 nuns who belonged to the Carmel of Compiègne were executed in Paris. After the abolition of all religious communities by the National Assembly, they had continued to practice their faith together, and the Revolutionary Tribunal accordingly charged them with counter-revolutionary practices. In the most famous scene of his work - the last one - Poulenc set this execution to music, not only following the literary models for his libretto, but also following tradition: The nuns mount the scaffold, singing the Salve Regina. With the sound of the guillotine, one voice stops, until at the end only one singer can be heard. When this voice is also interrupted by the sharp sound of the guillotine and shortly afterwards another soprano voiceVeni creator spiritus , the strong amalgamation of historicizing and fictional elements reaches its climax, which made the Dialogues such gripping theatrical material and helped to secure the work an important place in the operatic history of the 20th century.

At the center of the work is the figure who, in the scene described, sings the hymn to the Holy Spirit, which is sung in the Catholic Church on such important occasions as the entry of the cardinals into the synod to elect the pope: Blanche de la Force. This character is not historical, but a creation of the German author Gertrud von le Fort, on whose novella The Last at the Scaffold the play Dialogues des Carmélites by the French author Georges Bernanos is based, which in turn served Francis Poulenc as a model for the libretto to his opera.

Blanche de la Force decides against the misgivings of her noble family, who are positive about the ideals of the revolution, in favor of life in Carmel - here she expects the possibility of being able to lead a "heroic life". With her choice of the religious name Blanche de l'Agonie du Christ — Blanche of the Agony of Christ — the central theme of the opera is already brought to the point in the second scene: the fear of death, especially in connection with the holy agony of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, is a contentious issue in Carmel in revolutionary France. There is the dying prioress Madame de Croissy, so overcome by fear that in her agony she doubts God, prompting the young nun Constance de Saint Dénis to think: "One does not die for oneself, but the one for the other; or even one instead of the other, who knows?' There is the new prioress, Madame Lidoine, who warns against forgetting humility in the enthusiasm for martyrdom. There is her counterpart, the Subprioress Mère Marie de l'Incarnation, who seems to succumb to this danger. And there is Blanche above all, who threatens to despair of the heroism she strives for, of the urgent desire to mean "something great."

Gertrud von le Fort described the character of Blanche as the starting point of her poetry and as the »embodiment of the fear of death of an entire epoch«: The last one on the scaffold appeared in Germany in 1932. The questions about dying for something and for others, about the fear of the Death, the nature of meaningful life, and the shaping of community that are negotiated within them are fascinating within the theological context from which they spring — and reach far beyond it.

Francis Poulenc traces his protagonists in an impressively clear score which, like almost all of his compositions, moves within the tonal framework, specifically within that of diatonic neoclassicism. Poulenc, whose great passion was song composition, is also a composer of voices and language here: the music serves the singing, the singing shapes the characters. For guidance, the composer has assigned five major female voices in operatic literature to the five leading female roles — Amneris, Kundry, Desdemona, Thaïs and Zerlina. Based on these voice ideas, Poulenc creates characters, each with their own individual rhythmic diction and melody, who enter into the eponymous dialogues with one another. The liveliness of the work is also due to the pronounced work with recurring motifs,

Dialogues des Carmélites was first performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1959, two years after the premiere at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the French-language premiere at the Opéra de Paris. In this production by the premiere director Margarethe Wallmann, Dialogues des Carmélites was last seen in the Haus am Ring in 1964. The work by director Magdalena Fuchsberger and Maestro Bertrand de Billy is the first new production of Francis Poulenc's Chef d'Œuvre at the Vienna State Opera in more than sixty years.

Unter den drei Opern, die Francis Poulenc geschaffen hat, beruht seine einzige abendfüllende auf einer historischen Begebenheit aus der Zeit der »Grande Terreur« in Frankreich: Am 12. Juli 1794 wurden in Paris 16 Nonnen hingerichtet, die dem Karmel von Compiègne angehörten. Sie hatten nach der Aufhebung aller religiösen Gemeinschaften durch die Nationalversammlung ihren Glauben gemeinschaftlich weiterpraktiziert, die Anklage des Revolutionstribunals lautete entsprechend auf konterrevolutionäre Praktiken. In der berühmtesten Szene seines Werks — der letzten — hat Poulenc eben diese Hinrichtung vertont, darin nicht nur den literarischen Vorlagen für sein Libretto, sondern auch der Überlieferung folgend: Die Nonnen besteigen das Schafott, das Salve Regina singend. Mit dem Klang des Fallbeils setzt jeweils eine Stimme aus, bis am Ende nur noch eine einzige Sängerin zu hören ist. Als auch diese Stimme vom scharfen Klang der Guillotine unterbrochen wird und kurz darauf eine andere Sopranstimme das Veni creator spiritus anstimmt, kommt jene starke Verquickung historisierender und fiktionaler Elemente an ihren Höhepunkt, die die Dialogues zu einem so packenden Theaterstoff werden ließ und dazu beitrug, dem Werk einen bedeutenden Platz in der Operngeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts zu sichern.

Im Zentrum des Werks steht jene Figur, die in der beschriebenen Szene den Hymnus an den Heiligen Geist anstimmt, der in der katholischen Kirche bei so bedeutenden Anlässen wie dem Einzug der Kardinäle in die Synode zur Wahl des Papstes gesungen wird: Blanche de la Force. Dieser Charakter ist nicht historisch, sondern eine Schöpfung der deutschen Autorin Gertrud von le Fort, auf deren Novelle Die Letzte am Schafott das Theaterstück Dialogues des Carmélites des französischen Autors Georges Bernanos beruht, das wiederum Francis Poulenc als Vorlage für das Libretto zu seiner Oper diente.

Blanche de la Force entscheidet sich gegen die Bedenken ihrer adeligen, dabei den Idealen der Revolution positiv gegenüberstehenden Familie für das Leben im Karmel — hier erwartet sie sich die Möglichkeit, ein »heroisches Leben« führen zu können. Mit ihrer Wahl des Ordensnamens Blanche de l’Agonie du Christ — Blanche von der Todesangst Christi — wird das zentrale Thema der Oper bereits in der zweiten Szene auf den Punkt gebracht: Die Angst vor dem Tod, zumal in der Verbindung mit der heiligen Agonie Christi im Garten Gethsemane, ist im Karmel im revolutionären Frankreich ein umkämpftes Thema. Da ist die sterbende Priorin Madame de Croissy, die die Angst so sehr überwältigt, dass sie im Todeskampf an Gott zweifelt, was die junge Nonne Constance de Saint Dénis auf Gedanken bringt: »Man stirbt nicht für sich allein, sondern die einen für die anderen; oder sogar die einen anstelle der anderen, wer weiß?« Da ist die neue Priorin Madame Lidoine, die davor warnt, in der Begeisterung für das Martyrium die Demut zu vergessen. Da ist ihr Gegenüber, die Unterpriorin Mère Marie de l’Incarnation, die eben dieser Gefährdung zu erliegen scheint. Und da ist vor allem Blanche, die an jenem angestrebten Heroismus, an dem drängenden Wunsch, »etwas Großes« zu bedeuten, zu verzweifeln droht.

Gertrud von le Fort beschrieb die Figur der Blanche als Ausgangspunkt ihrer Dichtung und als die »Verkörperung der Todesangst einer ganzen Epoche«: Die Letzte am Schafott erschien in Deutschland 1932. Die Fragen nach dem Sterben für etwas und für andere, nach der Angst vor dem Tod, der Beschaffenheit eines bedeutsamen Lebens und der Gestaltung einer Gemeinschaft, die darin verhandelt werden, sind innerhalb des theologischen Kontextes, dem sie entstammen, faszinierend — und reichen weit über diesen hinaus.

Francis Poulenc spürt seinen Protagonistinnen in einer bestechend klaren Partitur nach, die sich wie fast all seine Kompositionen im tonalen Rahmen, konkret in dem eines diatonischen Neoklassizismus, bewegt. Poulenc, dessen große Leidenschaft die Liedkomposition war, ist auch hier ein Komponist der Stimmen und der Sprache: Die Musik dient dem Gesang, der Gesang formt die Charaktere. Der Komponist hat den fünf weiblichen Hauptrollen zur Orientierung fünf große Frauenstimmen der Opernliteratur zugeordnet — Amneris, Kundry, Desdemona, Thaïs und Zerlina. Von diesen Stimmvorstellungen ausgehend kreiert Poulenc Charaktere mit je individueller rhythmischer Diktion und Melodik, die miteinander in die titelgebenden Dialoge treten. Die Lebendigkeit des Werks verdankt sich auch der ausgeprägten Arbeit mit wiederkehrenden Motiven, die das Seelenleben der Figuren in bemerkenswertem Detailreichtum musikalisch fassen: So finden sich etwa mit den Themen »peur«, »anxiété« und »crainte« gleich drei verschiedene Schattierungen des zentralen Topos der Angst.

Dialogues des Carmélites wurde an der Wiener Staatsoper erstmals 1959 aufgeführt, zwei Jahre nach der Uraufführung am Teatro alla Scala in Mailand und der französischsprachigen Erstaufführung an der Opéra de Paris. In dieser Inszenierung der Uraufführungsregisseurin Margarethe Wallmann war Dialogues des Carmélites 1964 zuletzt im Haus am Ring zu sehen. Die Arbeit von Regisseurin Magdalena Fuchsberger und Maestro Bertrand de Billy ist also die erste Neuproduktion von Francis Poulencs Chef d’Œuvre an der Wiener Staatsoper nach mehr als sechzig Jahren.
