Carthage, in mythical times. Aeneas, who fled from the burning Troy and reached North Africa with his ships across the Mediterranean, meets the beautiful Queen Dido. The two love each other, but fate calls Aeneas to Italy to found a new empire there. Dido remains abandoned and broken.

For some, Purcell's music is one of the most beautiful, most dramatic, most timeless compositions of the Baroque - to others it is hardly known. Now his only “real” opera is coming to the stage of the Lüneburg Theater for the first time. Purcell, born 16 years before Bach and Handel, wrote music full of passions, joy, hardships and worries - and thus points the way to Mozart. Dido's famous lament, with which she ends her life, proves Purcell's extraordinary power of expression to open up a whole world with just a few tones. But his ability to write dance sets and choirs of great melodic abundance and rhythmic power also makes this work an ideal project for a renewed collaboration between ballet and opera ensemble.
