The abduction from the Seraglio
In Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail there is a reunion with one of the most interesting musicians in the baroque and classical repertoire at the moment, Riccardo Minasi. In Zurich he conducted Mozart's Don Giovanni , now he returns to the podium of our Orchestra La Scintilla. The cast of this revival is also handpicked: as Konstanze, the internationally sought-after soprano Brenda Rae makes her debut at the Zurich Opera House, Belmonte sings the tenor Daniel Behle, who is celebrated for his interpretations of Mozart.

Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio is considered by many to be a fresh, optimistic but harmless work by a brilliant composer on the verge of mastery . And the plot about Konstanze, who was kidnapped by pirates and is now stuck in the seraglio of Pasha Selim, seems somewhat naive at first glance, seems to confirm this impression. But Mozart's music makes deeply human characters out of the types of characters that seem to be rooted in the Turkish opera popular in the 18th century.

Mozart was more concerned with the inner conflicts of the characters than with the external plot, which he explores in depth psychology with his music. The director David Hermann also understands Belmonte's journey, who wants to free Konstanze from the seraglio, not as a journey into the – external – stranger, but rather as a nightmarish journey of Belmonte to his own fears and spiritual abysses. He sets the action in a very modern environment.

Die Entführung aus dem Serail
In Mozarts Entführung aus dem Serail gibt es eine Wiederbegegnung mit einem der zurzeit interessantesten Musiker im barocken und klassischen Repertoire, Riccardo Minasi. In Zürich dirigierte er Mozarts Don Giovanni, nun kehrt er ans Pult unseres Orchestra La Scintilla zurück. Auch die Besetzung dieser Wiederaufnahme ist handverlesen: Als Konstanze gibt die international gefragte Sopranistin Brenda Rae ihr Debüt am Opernhaus Zürich, Belmonte singt der für seine Interpretationen im Mozartfach gefeierte Tenor Daniel Behle.

Als frisches, optimistisches, aber harmloses Werk eines genialen Komponisten an der Schwelle zur Meisterschaft gilt vielen Mozarts Entführung aus dem Serail. Und die auf den ersten Blick etwas naiv anmutende Handlung um Konstanze, die von Seeräubern geraubt wurde und nun im Serail des Bassa Selim festsitzt, scheint diesen Eindruck zu bestätigen. Doch Mozarts Musik macht aus den Figurentypen, die scheinbar der im 18. Jahrhundert beliebten Türkenoper verhaftet sind, zutiefst menschliche Charaktere.

Mehr als um die äussere Handlung ging es Mozart um die inneren Konflikte der Figuren, die er mit seiner Musik tiefenpsychologisch auslotet. Der Regisseur David Hermann begreift denn auch die Reise Belmontes, der Konstanze aus dem Serail befreien will, nicht als Reise in die – äussere – Fremde, sondern vielmehr als albtraumhafte Reise Belmontes zu seinen eigenen Ängsten und seelischen Abgründen. Dabei siedelt er die Handlung in einem ganz heutigen Umfeld an.
