Die Fledermaus Strauss II

When the Wiener Philharmoniker’s New Year’s concert is on the telly, the dancing kicks off in many a living room to the festive music of Johann Strauss II. Everyone succumbs to the infectious and masterfully orchestrated melodies of the ‘Waltz King’. Opera Ballet Vlaanderen will perform his most famous operetta Die Fledermaus in concert form.

Like a fly on the wall, you follow how Dr. Falke takes revenge on his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein by playing a prank on him. During a grand party at Prince Orlofsky’s, his cunning

plan comes into effect and the plot thickens. To great hilarity, the misunderstandings pile up and the masks fall off. ‘You see, the champagne was to blame for it all!’, the hungover characters realise at the end of the operetta, in which Strauss pokes fun at the Viennese bourgeoisie of the 19th century. Director Tom Goossens brings the humorous story to life in a semi-staged version. Die Fledermaus will deliver a bang as festive as a bottle of champagne on New Year’s Day.
