The operetta workshop this year is all about Leo Falls. Three young conductors have the opportunity to work on a piece with the Orchestra of the Musical Comedy. The choice fell on Fall's unknown »street singer«, whose content is based on Bernard Shaw's »Pygmalion«. Millionaire Brown wants his daughter Mabel to marry the jaded rake Georges, who has invented an invention that would benefit Brown's company. Mabel makes a bet with the Inventor. In three weeks he's supposed to make an interesting woman out of any girl, and then she'll marry him. His choice falls on the street singer Sonja. Will Georges win the bet? A central number of the operetta is the "jazz" in the third act - at the premiere there was a jazz band on the operetta stage for the first time.

Before the performance on Sunday, January 8th, 2023, there will be an introductory talk at 2 p.m. in the Venus Hall. Stefan Frey, author of the book »Leo Fall. Mocking rebel of the operetta” and Tobias Engeli, chief conductor and acting music director of the musical comedy.

The performance on January 7th, 2023 will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. by MDR Klassik, MDR Kultur and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Der Operettenworkshop steht in diesem Jahr ganz im Zeichen Leo Falls. Drei junge Dirigenten haben die Möglichkeit, mit dem Orchester der Musikalischen Komödie ein Stück zu erarbeiten. Die Wahl fiel auf Falls unbekannte »Straßensängerin«, die inhaltlich an Bernard Shaws »Pygmalion« angelehnt ist. Der Millionär Brown möchte, dass seine Tochter Mabel den blasierten Lebemann Georges heiratet, da dieser eine Erfindung gemacht hat, die dem Brown’schen Unternehmen von Nutzen wäre. Mabel schließt eine Wette mit dem Erfinder ab. In drei Wochen soll er aus einem beliebigen Mädel eine interessante Frau machen, dann wird sie ihn heiraten. Seine Wahl fällt auf die Straßensängerin Sonja. Wird Georges die Wette gewinnen? Eine zentrale Nummer der Operette ist der »Jazz« im dritten Akt – bei der Uraufführung stand zum ersten Mal überhaupt eine Jazzband auf der Operettenbühne.

Vor der Vorstellung am Sonntag, den 08.01.23 findet um 14:00 Uhr im Venussaal ein Einführungsgespräch statt. Dabei sind Stefan Frey, Autor des Buchs »Leo Fall. Spöttischer Rebell der Operette« und Tobias Engeli, Chefdirigent und Kommissarischer Musikdirektor der Musikalischen Komödie.

Die Vorstellung am 07.01.23 wird live um 20:00 Uhr von MDR Klassik, MDR Kultur und Deutschlandfunk Kultur übertragen.
