Paul’s wife Marie has died, and he spends all his time in a room full of relics of the past, sunk in memories. Into this airless mausoleum bursts a force of life, the dancer Mariette – who bears a striking resemblance to Marie...

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is that very rare thing, a forgotten genius, and the rediscovery of his gloriously lush, intensely romantic music is long overdue. Written in the shadow of the First World War, this great opera is a heartbreaking psychological portrait of someone coming to terms with a terrible loss.

Giordano Bellincampi leads an enormous orchestra and a stellar cast. Aleš Briscein has sung the role of Paul at the Dresden Semperoper, and Richard Šveda returns after a marvellous performance as Don Giovanni for the APO in 2019.
