Yet everything moves . Beethoven's Seventh Symphony is the apotheosis of dance "in its most sublime essence", as Richard Wagner had already theorized. Dance as the sublimation of a rhythmic essence, which runs through the entire work in a gradual and constant crescendo of metric intensity. In the Allegretto we are overwhelmed and transfigured by the dance of music, as happens a few decades later in Don Quixote by Richard Strauss, an extraordinary symphonic poem for viola, cello and large orchestra (97 elements!) built around the story of the character who emerged from the pen by Miguel de Cervantes. In this Don Quixote every moment of the musical story, every measure never dilutes or confuses characters and events, on the contrary it manages to specify gestures and words, without there being anything excessive, arbitrary or distracting in the form.
