José Saramago wrote the play Don Giovanni ou O dissoluto absolvido based on a question that  starts the whole narrative moving. Taking Mozart’s opera Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni as his starting point, the Portuguese Nobel Laureate asked: “What if Don Giovanni hadn’t gone to Hell?” He then imagined that Seville’s great seducer, immortalised by Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte, would not have been condemned for his actions, questioning the power of moral judgment. In this stage version, Mozart’s music and Saramago’s play converge in an original staging by Jean Paul Bucchieri with musical direction by Nuno Coelho.

José Saramago lançou-se na escrita da peça de teatro Don Giovanni ou O dissoluto absolvido a partir de uma pergunta que coloca em marcha toda a narrativa; partindo da ópera de Mozart Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni, o Prémio Nobel da Literatura português questionou-se: “E se Don Giovanni não tivesse caído no inferno?”. Imaginou então que o grande sedutor de Sevilha, imortalizado por Mozart e Lorenzo Da Ponte, não acabaria condenado pelas suas ações, questionando os julgamentos morais. Nesta versão de palco, a música de Mozart e o texto de Saramago convergem numa encenação original de Jean Paul Bucchieri, com direção musical de Nuno Coelho.
