At the Dresden Music Festival 2018, the Munich Philharmonic played the acclaimed world premiere of Tan Dun's "Buddha Passion". Now the impressive work, which has meanwhile also been celebrated by audiences in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Melbourne, is being performed for the first time in Munich. Tan Dun's "Buddha Passion" is inspired by the Buddhist wall paintings and ancient musical manuscripts that were found in the labyrinth of the Chinese Mogao caves. In six parts, Tan Dun interweaves the ancient narratives of the Buddha's teachings with the universal concepts of love, forgiveness, sacrifice and redemption, which the Christian passion story is also about. Tan Dun skilfully merges Far Eastern singing techniques and traditional Chinese instruments with the Western European world of sound, creating a musical work that spans the world.
