"Nothing!" That is the great realization that the scholar Faust devastated in old age: He understood nothing, achieved nothing! His long research life was a waste! He only has the hope that death could give him peace from the pressing questions. But just as Faust is about to put himself out of his torment, he is presented with a devilishly tempting offer: the fulfillment of all wishes in exchange for his soul. Faust agrees without much hesitation and demands a restart of his life, this time in which nothing is to be missed. Rejuvenated, he wants to pursue pleasure and love instead of knowledge. With the support of his devilish companion Méphistophélès, Faust easily manages to ensnare the pretty, gullible Marguerite. But when she gets pregnant Faust's interest in her has long since expired. While he is already looking for a new frenzy, an existential struggle begins for her.

In Germany, there was a piqued reaction to this French adaptation of Goethe's tragedy and the opera was promptly renamed Margarethe out of respect for the original . It is not without good reason that the almost incidentally encountered misfortune becomes an important, if not the central, figure here. Instead of the metaphysical dimensions, Charles Gounod devotes himself entirely to the individual interpretation of the soul with catchy melodies such as the literally brilliant »Jewel Aria«. No wonder that this lyrical Faust has conquered German stages and hearts under its original title and, together with Bizet's Carmen , is one of the most frequently performed French operas.
