“Fiddler on the Roof… somewhere we all are. We try to play a clean tune while balancing so we don't break our necks. Not easy!"

The setting is 20th-century Anatevka, a village inhabited by Jews and Russians, where community life is defined by religion and all-encompassing traditions. Tevje, the milkman, lives here with his wife Golde and their five daughters. The father does everything to keep the family together and marry off his daughters according to tradition. However, the young people want to marry for love instead of religious ideals, so the eldest daughter, Cejtel, chooses the poor tailor, Mótel, instead of the wealthy husband; his sister, Hódel, travels to Siberia after her imprisoned lover, Perchik; Hava, the third girl, finds happiness with a boy of a different religion. Meanwhile, the local Jewish community has to face various trials: the growing anti-Semitism, the political movements and finally the decree that they have to leave the land of their ancestors, leaving behind their property!

The play was presented for the first time in Hungary at the Operetta Theater on February 9, 1973, directed by László Vámos, with Ferenc Bessenyei in the lead role. It is a very important work, which forms a kind of transition between the genres of operetta and musical, and appeals to the audience with its special musical world and bittersweet humor. The play was banned in 1974, and only eleven years later, in 1985, it was presented again, also at the Operettszínház.

In 2021, directed by Yvette Bozsik, with the participation of all the artists of the theater, it will return to the repertoire of the Operettszínház!

„Hegedűs a háztetőn… valahol mind azok vagyunk. Megpróbálunk egy letisztult dallamot kicsalni, miközben egyensúlyozunk, hogy ne szegjük nyakunkat. Nem könnyű!”

A helyszín a 20. századi Anatevka, egy zsidók és oroszok lakta falu, ahol a közösségéletét a vallás és a mindenre kiterjedő hagyományok határozzák meg. Itt él Tevje, a tejesemberfeleségével, Golde-val, valamint öt lányukkal. Az apa mindent elkövet, hogy a családot összetartva lányait a tradíciók szerint adja férjhez. A fiatalok azonban vallási eszmék helyett, szerelemből kívánnak házasodni, így a legidősebb lány, Cejtel a dúsgazdag férj helyett a szegény szabólegényt, Mótelt választja; húga, Hódel Szibériába utazik fogvatartott kedvese, Perchik után; Háva, a harmadik lány pedig egy más vallású fiú mellett talál rá a boldogságra. Mindeközben a helyi zsidó közösségnek különböző megpróbáltatásokkal kell szembenéznie: az egyre erősödő antiszemitizmussal, a politikai megmozdulásokkal és végül a rendelettel, hogy vagyonukat hátrahagyva el kell hagyniuk őseik földjét!

A darabot Magyarországon először az Operettszínházban mutatták be 1973. február 9-én Vámos László rendezésében, a főszerepben Bessenyei Ferenccel. Nagyon fontos mű, mely egyfajta átmenetet képez az operett és a musical műfaja között, különleges zenei világával és keserédes humorával szólítja meg a nézőket. A darabot 1974-ben betiltották, és csak tizenegy év múlva, 1985-ben mutatták be újra, ugyancsak az Operettszínházban.

2021-ben Bozsik Yvette rendezésében, a színház valamennyi művészének közreműködésével tér vissza az Operettszínház repertoárjába!
