Свободолюбивият дух на Бетховен винаги го е тласкал към тематика, която да му позволи да изрази ненавистта си към всички подтисници, към враговете на свободата, да възпее борбите на човечеството за справедливост и щастие. Композиторът отдавна е замислял да напише опера, дори е започнал да работи върху „Александър Македонски“ по либрето на директора на „Театър ан дер Вин“ Емануел Шиканедер (1748–1812), но прекъснал след уволнението на Шиканедер от театъра. След като се запознава с драмата на Жан Буйи (1763–1842) „Леонора“ или „Съпружеска любов“, композиторът се спира на нея, въпреки че е знаел операта върху същия текст на френския композитор Пиер Гаво (1761–1825), изнесена през 1798 г. в Париж. А по времето, когато Бетховен вече започва да пише „Фиделио“, в Дрезден (1804) е поставена операта „Леонора“ или „Съпружеска любов“ от италианския композитор Фердинанд Паер (17711839). Немският текст на либретото Бетховен получава от виенския литератор Йозеф Зонлайтнер (1765–1835), който значително е преработил френския първообраз. През 1805 г. Бетховен завършва операта, която е представена за първи път на 20 ноември същата година под името „Леонора“. Но още след третото представление поради слабия успех операта е свалена от сцената. Бетховен преживява твърде тежко тази несполука. За него е било трудно да приеме, че сюжетът на Буйи, създаден по действителен случай, може да не вълнува публиката. И композиторът решава да преработи операта си. С поправката на либретото се залавя големият приятел на Бетховен Стефан Бройнинг. Той изхвърля някои сцени, като оставя само две действия. Бетховен от своя страна също изменя редица места — някои прекомпозира, а други написва наново. Той композира и нова увертюра към втората редакция — тази, която днес е позната под името „Леонора № З“.

След втората редакция „Фиделио“ се изнася на 29 март 1806 г., но и този път се проваля, дори още след второто представление. В едно свое писмо Стефан Бройнннг отбелязва, че Бетховен никога не е бил така съкрушен, както при пропадането на „Фиделио“. Въпреки това композиторът не се отказва от мисълта за създаване на оперно произведение. През 1808 г. той изготвя план за опера върху сюжета на „Макбет“, после се спира на един сюжет от времето на древния Рим, а през последните години от живота си замисля написването на опера върху сюжета на „Мелузина“ от Франц Грилпарцер (1791–1872). Бетховен не се решава да започне друга опера, макар отдавна да мечтае да напише музика към Гьотевия „Фауст“. След завършването на Седмата и Осмата симфония той отново е обхванат от желание да върне към живот „Фиделио“. Този път с преработката на текста се заема опитният драматург, литератор и режисьор Фридрих Трайчке (1776–1842). Бетховен работи много дълго и с голяма взискателност над всяка музикална фраза. Останали са извънредно много скици от „Фиделио“. Запазени са даже 18 различни варианта на началото на една от ариите в операта. Към третата редакция композиторът написва нова, вече четвърта увертюра, известна днес под името „Фиделио“, която е значително по-кратка. Операта е поставена за трети път вече под името „Фиделио“ в „Кертнертортеатър“, а не в „Театър анд дер Вин“. Премиерата, изнесена в дните на Виенския конгрес — 22 май 1814 г., преминава с голям успех. Обаче истинската слава „Фиделио“ си спечелва след постановката през 1822 г., в която ролята на Леонора бива изпълнена от прочутата певица Шрьодер Девриент, тогава само 19-годишна, по-късно прочута изпълнителка на Вагнер. Изключителните качества на увертюрата „Леонора №3“ са накарали много диригенти да я използуват като антрактна музика. Така например Ото Николай — авторът на операта „Веселите уиндзорки“, я изпълнявал между I и II действие, Ханс фон Бюлов — като епилог след операта, а именитият композитор и диригент Густав Малер поставя началото на традицията „Леонора №3“ да се свири между двете картини на второто действие.

Операта „Фиделио“ е поставена за пръв път у нас в Софийската народна опера през 1954 г. от  режисьора Драган Кърджиев.

Beethoven's freedom-loving spirit always pushed him towards themes that would allow him to express his hatred of all oppressors, of the enemies of freedom, to sing of humanity's struggles for justice and happiness. The composer had long considered writing an opera, even starting work on "Alexander the Great" based on the libretto of the director of the Theater an der Wien, Emanuel Schikaneder (1748–1812), but stopped after Schikaneder's dismissal from the theater. Having become acquainted with Jean Bouilly's (1763–1842) drama "Leonora" or "Conjugal Love", the composer settled on it, although he knew the opera based on the same text by the French composer Pierre Gavotte (1761–1825), performed in 1798 in Paris. And by the time Beethoven was already starting to write "Fidelio", in Dresden (1804) the opera "Leonora" or "Conjugal Love" by the Italian composer Ferdinand Paer (17711839) was staged. Beethoven received the German text of the libretto from the Viennese literati Joseph Sonleitner (1765–1835), who significantly revised the French original. In 1805, Beethoven completed the opera, which was presented for the first time on November 20 of the same year under the name "Leonora". But after the third performance, due to poor success, the opera was taken off the stage. Beethoven experienced this misfortune very hard. It was difficult for him to accept that Buyi's plot, based on a real case, might not excite the audience. And the composer decided to revise his opera. Beethoven's great friend Stefan Breuning took up the correction of the libretto. He throws out some scenes, leaving only two acts. Beethoven, for his part, also altered a number of passages—recomposing some and rewriting others. He also composed a new overture to the second edition — the one known today as Leonora No. 3.

After the second revision, "Fidelio" was performed on March 29, 1806, but this time also failed, even after the second performance. In one of his letters, Stefan Breuning noted that Beethoven had never been so devastated as at the failure of Fidelio. However, the composer did not give up the idea of ​​creating an operatic work. In 1808 he drew up a plan for an opera based on the plot of Macbeth, then he settled on a plot from the time of ancient Rome, and in the last years of his life he considered writing an opera based on the plot of Melusine by Franz Grillparzer (1791 –1872). Beethoven did not decide to start another opera, although he had long dreamed of writing music for Goethe's "Faust". After the completion of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, he was again seized with a desire to bring Fidelio back to life. This time, the experienced playwright, writer and director Friedrich Treichke (1776–1842) undertook the reworking of the text. Beethoven worked very long and with great exactitude over each musical phrase. An extraordinary number of sketches from "Fidelio" remain. Even 18 different versions of the beginning of one of the arias in the opera have been preserved. For the third edition, the composer wrote a new, already fourth overture, known today under the name "Fidelio", which is significantly shorter. The opera was staged for the third time already under the name "Fidelio" in the "Kertnertortheater" and not in the "Theater und der Wien". The premiere, delivered during the days of the Congress of Vienna - May 22, 1814, was a great success. However, the real fame of "Fidelio" was gained after the production in 1822, in which the role of Leonora was performed by the famous singer Schröder Devrient, then only 19 years old. later a famous Wagner performer. The exceptional qualities of the Leonora No. 3 Overture have led many conductors to use it as intermission music. For example, Otto Nicolai - the author of the opera "The Merry Windsors" performed it between Acts I and II, Hans von Bülow - as an epilogue after the opera, and the famous composer and conductor Gustav Mahler started the tradition of playing "Leonora No. 3" between the two pictures of the second act.

The opera "Fidelio" was staged for the first time in our country at the Sofia National Opera in 1954 by director Dragan Kurdzhiev.
