Driehonderd jaar geleden schreef Händel slechts één opera voor het seizoen van de Royal Academy – maar wat voor een! Giulio Cesare in Egitto was een meesterwerk, dat Händels reputatie als de belangrijkste operacomponist van zijn tijd vestigde. De muzikale uitwerking van de karakters bereikte in dit werk een nieuwe intensiteit. De productie – gekenmerkt door fikse ruzies tussen de componist en de beroemde, maar lastige zangers – beleefde dertien voorstellingen, en werd in de volgende jaren driemaal herhaald. De opera was Händels populairste in Engeland en op het continent.
