The poor siblings Hansel and Gretel are sent by their mother to look for berries in the forest. Soon the children can't find their way out of the forest and have to spend the night in the lonely gloom under the protection of 14 angels, where they finally come across the gingerbread house of the evil crispy witch. The story of Hansel and Gretel is one of the most well-known fairy tales from the collection of the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Engelbert Humperdinck and his librettist Adelheid Wette created one of the most successful operas of the 20th century from the well-known material. Since its Weimar premiere in 1893, the work has been part of the standard Christmas repertoire of every music theater and continues to delight young and old to this day.

Das arme Geschwisterpaar Hänsel und Gretel wird von seiner Mutter zum Beerensuchen in den Wald geschickt. Bald schon finden die Kinder nicht mehr aus dem Wald heraus und müssen unter dem Schutz von 14 Engeln die Nacht in der einsamen Düsternis verbringen, wo sie schließlich auf das Pfefferkuchenhaus der bösen Knusperhexe stoßen. Die Geschichte von Hänsel und Gretel zählt wohl zu den bekanntesten Märchen aus der Sammlung der Brüder Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm. Engelbert Humperdinck und seine Librettistin Adelheid Wette schufen aus dem bekannten Stoff eine der erfolgreichsten Opern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seit seiner Weimarer Uraufführung im Jahre 1893 gehört das Werk zum weihnachtlichen Standardrepertoire jedes Musiktheaterhauses und begeistert bis heute Jung und Alt.
