Phèdre ist leidenschaftlich in ihren Stiefsohn Hippolyte verliebt. Als sie vom vermeintlichen Tod ihres Gatten Thésée, dem König von Athen, erfährt, gesteht sie Hippolyte ihre Liebe und bietet ihm den Königsthron an. Doch Hippolyte weist Phèdre ab. Er ist in Aricie verliebt, die letzte Nachkommin eines verfeindeten Geschlechts. Als der totgeglaubte Thésée zurückkehrt, wird er Zeuge einer heftigen Auseinandersetzung und glaubt, Hippolyte wolle sich an Phèdre vergehen. Auf sein Flehen hin wird Hippolyte von den Göttern bestraft: ein grauenhaftes Meeresungeheuer verschlingt ihn. Phèdre, die ihre Schuld begreift, tötet sich selbst. Was in Racines Phèdre tragisch endet, nimmt bei Rameau eine glücklichere Wendung: Wie durch ein Wunder überlebt Hippolyte und ist am Ende mit seiner Geliebten Aricie vereint. Jean-Philippe Rameau war 50 Jahre alt, als er 1733 mit Hippolyte et Aricie seine erste Oper auf die Bühne brachte. Als bedeutendster Musiktheoretiker seiner Zeit schuf er damit ein Werk, das die damaligen Konventionen des französischen Musiktheaters bei weitem übertraf. «Es gibt in dieser einen Oper genügend Musik, um zehn daraus zu machen», soll der Komponist André Campra gesagt haben, «dieser Mann wird uns alle in den Schatten stellen». In der ersten Aufführung von Hippolyte et Aricie am Opernhaus Zürich steht mit Emmanuelle Haïm eine Expertin für die französische Musik des 18. Jahrhunderts am Pult des Orchestra La Scintilla. Regie führt Jetske Mijnssen, deren Inszenierungen sich durch grosse psychologische Finesse auszeichnen. Als Phèdre kehrt Stéphanie d’Oustrac ans Opernhaus Zürich zurück, wo sie bereits für ihre Interpretation von Charpentiers Médée gefeiert wurde. Cyrille Dubois, ein vielversprechender junger Künstler aus Frankreich, singt Hippolyte, die französische Sopranistin Mélissa Petit, in Zürich u.a. aus Freischütz und Werther bekannt, ist Aricie.

Phèdre is passionately in love with her stepson, Hippolyte. When she learns of the supposed death of her husband Thésée, the king of Athens, she confesses her love to Hippolyte and offers him the royal throne. But Hippolyte rejects Phèdre. He is in love with Aricie, the last descendant of an opposing family. When Thésée, who had been thought dead, returns, he witnesses a violent argument and believes that Hippolyte wants to violate Phèdre. At his pleading, Hippolyte is punished by the gods: a horrible sea monster devours him. Phèdre, realizing her guilt, kills herself. What in Racine's PhèdreEnding tragically, Rameau takes a happier turn: Miraculously, Hippolyte survives and is finally reunited with his beloved Aricie. Jean-Philippe Rameau was 50 years old when he staged his first opera , Hippolyte et Aricie , in 1733. As the most important music theorist of his time, he created a work that far surpassed the conventions of French music theater at the time. «There is enough music in this one opera to make ten out of it», the composer André Campra is said to have said, «this man will put us all in the shade». In the first performance of Hippolyte et AricieAt the Zurich Opera House, Emmanuelle Haïm, an expert in French music of the 18th century, conducts the Orchestra La Scintilla. Directed by Jetske Mijnssen, whose productions are characterized by great psychological finesse. As Phèdre, Stéphanie d'Oustrac returns to the Zurich Opera House, where she has already been celebrated for her interpretation of Charpentier's Médée. Cyrille Dubois, a promising young artist from France, sings Hippolyte, the French soprano Mélissa Petit, known in Zurich from Freischütz and Werther , among others , is Aricie.
