Emulando al Stravinski de Pulcinella, Ottorino Respighi rescató en 1919 la música de Rossini para su ballet La boutique fantasque. A su vez, tres años más tarde Ígor Stravinski compuso su ópera Mavra inspirándose en la ópera buffa rossiniana. Sin embargo –y de acuerdo con su autobiografía–, fue probablemente Alfredo Casella el primer gran compositor en ver al cisne de Pésaro con ojos del siglo XX. Y es que, en efecto, resulta casi imposible no reconocer en el libreto de Il turco in Italia premisas semejantes a las que convirtieron a Luigi Pirandello –también en torno a 1920– en una figura del teatro de vanguardia. Dicho de otro modo: la modernidad que buscaban afanosamente Respighi, Stravinski o Casella ya la había descubierto, un siglo antes, el inventor de los cannelloni, Rossini.

Il turco in Italia es –con su seis personajes en busca de un autor, su demiurgo/poeta y su chispeante partitura– un manjar predestinado para Laurent Pelly, el reconocido y experimentado maestro de la comedia que hemos admirado en La hija del regimiento, Falstaff y Viva la mamma!, entre otros títulos, y quien asumirá la dirección escénica de esta deliran-te comedia en una nueva producción que pro-mete convertirse –otra vez– en un clásico.

Following the example of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, Ottorino Respighi retrieved the music of Rossini for his ballet La Boutique fantasque in 1919. Likewise, three years later, Igor Stravinsky composed his opera Mavra inspired by the opera buffa of Rossini. Nevertheless - and in keeping with his autobiography - it was probably Alfredo Casella, who was the first important composer to see the “Swan” of Pésaro with eyes of the 20th century. In effect, it is almost impossible to not recognise in the libretto of Il turco in Italia similar premises which made Luigi Pirandello, also around 1920, a vanguard figure of theatre. In other words:  the modernity which Respighi, Stravinsky or Casella were intent on finding, had already been discovered a century before by Rossini.

Il turco in Italia, with its six characters in search of an author, its creative poet and a scintillating score, is a predestined tasty morsel for Laurent Pelly. The acclaimed and experienced master of comedy whom we have admired in La Fille du Régiment, Falstaff and Viva la mamma!, among other titles,  will  direct the staging of this hilarious comedy in a new production which promises to become, once again, a classic.
