Dem Mädchenalter gerade entwachsen, findet sich Katja in einem klaustrophobischen Eheleben wieder, das von ihrer despotischen Schwiegermutter dominiert wird. Nachts überkommen sie körperliche Sehnsüchte, die im rigiden Alltag des freudlosen Wolgastädtchens keinen Platz haben: „Ich kann nicht schlafen. Immer klingt mir solch ein Gefühl in den Ohren. Irgendjemand spricht mit mir so liebevoll, als ob eine Taube gurrt, als ob er mich umarmen würde, so innig, so heiß, so glühend, als ob er mich irgendwohin
führte und … ich gehe mit ihm!“ In der Hingabe an einen anderen Mann erfährt sie trotz nagender Schuldgefühle eine nie gekannte sinnliche Befriedigung. Doch mit dem Ausleben ihrer Leidenschaft verstößt sie gegen patriarchale Normen, die auch sie verinnerlicht hat. Ein Konflikt, an dem sie als tief gläubige Christin zugrunde geht. Katja findet den Freitod in der Wolga, die sinnbildlich für die weibliche Sexualität steht.
So wie die komplexe Titelfigur lebt auch Leoš Janáčeks musikalische Welt von den Kontrasten, die der Chefdirigent Roland Kluttig am Pult der Grazer Philharmoniker zu schärfen weiß: Vor dem Hintergrund eines klanggewaltigen Naturschauspiels steht die präzise Zeichnung eines russischen Generationenkonflikts.
Mit Anika Rutkofsky (Regie), Eleni Konstantatou (Bühne), Marie Sturminger (Kostüme) und Johanna Danhauser (Dramaturgie) wird ein junges Regieteam mit der Inszenierung betraut, das die Jury des Ring Awards 2021, dem einzigen internationalen Musiktheaterwettbewerb für Regie und Bühnengestaltung, mit einer feministischen Lesart des „Don Giovanni“ überzeugt hat.

Just out of girlhood, Katja finds herself in a claustrophobic married life, dominated by her despotic mother-in-law. Someone is talking to me so lovingly, as if a dove is cooing, as if they are embracing me, so intimately, so hotly, so ardently, as if they are leading me somewhere and... I'm going with them!' In devotion to another man Despite nagging feelings of guilt, she experiences an unprecedented level of sensual satisfaction. But by living out her passion, she violates patriarchal norms, which she has internalized as well. A conflict that destroyed her as a deeply believing Christian.
Just like the complex title character, Leoš Janáček's musical world also lives from the contrasts that the chief conductor Roland Kluttig knows how to sharpen at the podium of the Graz Philharmonic: Against the background of a natural spectacle with a powerful sound, there is a precise drawing of a Russian generational conflict.
With Anika Rutkofsky (director), Eleni Konstantatou (stage), Marie Sturminger (costumes) and Johanna Danhauser (dramaturgy), a young team of directors is entrusted with the production, which the jury of the Ring Awards 2021, the only international music theater competition for direction and stage design, convinced with a feminist reading of "Don Giovanni".
