How much misery can art endure? The poet Rodolfo and his friends have dedicated their lives to art, even if the latest draft for a drama has to warm their Parisian studio for lack of firewood and hunger is a constant companion. The joy is all the greater when one of them manages to find food or money. On Christmas Eve, luck is on their side and the bohemians set out to sell the newly-earned money in the Latin Quarter. Only Rodolfo dutifully remains behind to finish one more article - and that evening finds great love in the form of his neighbor Mimì. But beyond all poetry, lust for life and love, not only hunger and cold lurk, but also illness and death.

Giacomo Puccini knew the precarious living conditions of unknown artists all too well, having starved when he was young and – like Rodolfo – had to burn some of his manuscripts to drive away the unbearable cold. No wonder, then, that he fell in love with the characters in Henri Murger's Scènes de la vie de bohèmeimmediately felt like among friends and decided to turn this novel into an opera. In addition to this captivatingly realistic image of Parisian bohemian subculture, Puccini created a moving, melodic portrait of the inner life and existential needs of his protagonists - and one of the most poignant final scenes in operatic literature, which is said to have moved even the composer to tears. The effect of the music of La Bohème can't be summed up any better than Thomas Mann in The Magic Mountain: "And there wasn't anything more tender on earth..."
