Este balletto in musica basado en los cantos 6 a 8 del Orlando furioso de Ariosto no es solo la primera ópera jamás compuesta por una mujer, sino también una de las primeras en ser representadas fuera de Italia –más concretamente, en Polonia– tras su estreno en la corte de los Medici. El libreto demanda un fastuoso surtido de efectos teatrales –hipogrifos, una embarcación construida con huesos de ballena, un monstruo marino alado y un ballet ecuestre– e incluye una variada gama de ritornelli, balletti, coros y tríos vocales femeninos, a la manera de los célebres concerti delle donne de las damas de Ferrara.

Personalidad clave en el nacimiento del género lírico –participó con solo trece años en el estreno de la Euridice de Peri, la ópera más antigua cuya música se haya conservado–, Caccini encarnó además a la hechicera Alcina en el estreno florentino de su obra, dando así prueba de sus múltiples talentos e inaugurando la ilustre nómina de óperas –de Rossi, Lully, Händel, Vivaldi y Haydn, entre otros muchos– basadas en la inspiradora obra de Ariosto que conforma uno de los hilos conductores de esta temporada.

This "balletto in musica”, part opera, part ballet, based on the Cantos VI to VIII of Orlando furioso by Ariosto is not only the first opera ever composed by a woman, but it was also one of the first to be performed outside Italy - specifically in Poland – after its premiere at the court of the Medici.  The libretto demands a sumptuous number of theatrical effects –hippogryphs, a boat woven of whale bones, a winged sea monster and a ballet on horseback – which include a wide variety of ritornelli, balletti, choruses and trios of female voices, in the manner of the famous concerti delle donne (consort of ladies) of the damsels of Ferrara.

A key name in the birth of the opera genre, she participated at the age of only thirteen in the premiere of Euridice by Peri, the earliest opera for which the music has been conserved. Caccini also played the part of the sorceress Alcina in the Florence premiere of her opera, a proof of her multiple talents. With this, she initiated the illustrious roster of operas – by Rossi, Lully, Händel, Vivaldi and Haydn, among many others– based on the inspiring work by Ariosto, which defines one of the guiding themes of this season.
