Le prélude de La Traviata donne à entendre une pulsation sourde, discrète, comme le rythme secret d’un cœur qui aurait du mal à battre. Ce cœur, c’est peut-être celui de Violetta Valéry. Lorsque le rideau se lève, elle sait qu’elle va mourir, condamnée par la phtisie. Elle a choisi de se perdre dans un tourbillon de fêtes frivoles et de plaisirs sans lendemain. Sa rencontre avec Alfredo, jeune homme idéaliste et amoureux, va la troubler jusqu’à la convaincre de donner une dernière chance à l’amour.

On retrouve dans le portrait de cette courtisane - adaptation de La Dame aux camélias d'Alexandre Dumas fils - tout l’humanisme de Verdi. Également certaines de ses plus déchirantes pages de chant. On a coutume de dire qu’il faudrait plusieurs voix pour chanter Violetta. Parce que la traviata - littéralement, la dévoyée - a plusieurs vies : il y a les feux d’artifices vocaux qui tourbillonnent à l’acte I, il y a la quiétude profonde d’une vie retirée à la campagne à l’acte II, il y a le sacrifice, la maladie, la joie et puis la mort finale…

La Traviata dresse également un portrait au vitriol de son temps : si Violetta place l’amour plus haut que tout, au point de se sacrifier pour sauver l’honneur des Germont, son sacrifice ne rend que plus criant l’hypocrisie et la bassesse de la bourgeoisie matérialiste. C’est que l’époque de La Traviata a vu s’éteindre les révolutions de 1848. La société que décrit Verdi vit désormais sous surveillance, de menus plaisirs et de grandes fêtes tristes… Sans doute le chant de Violetta était-il trop libre et trop brûlant pour ce monde trop étroit : elle devait le payer de sa vie.

Cette Traviata marque la reprise d’une production qui a fait date : la mise en scène de Jean-François Sivadier, créée au Festival international d’art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence en 2011. Dans cette version, imaginée par un authentique artisan de théâtre et grand amoureux d’opéra, le destin de Violetta semble se confondre avec celui d’une interprète qui brûle sur scène ses derniers feux avant de faire ses adieux inoubliables sous une fine pluie d’or. Ce spectacle est porté par une nouvelle génération d’interprètes qui lui donnent un souffle nouveau.

The prelude to La Traviata lets us hear a muted, discreet pulsation, like the secret rhythm of a heart struggling to beat. This heart is perhaps that of Violetta Valéry. When the curtain rises, she knows she is going to die, condemned by consumption. She has chosen to lose herself in a whirlwind of frivolous parties and one-night-long pleasures. Her meeting with Alfredo, an idealistic young man in love, will disturb her to the point of convincing her to give love one last chance.

We find in the portrait of this courtesan - adaptation of The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils - all the humanism of Verdi. Also some of his most heartbreaking singing pages. It is customary to say that it would take several voices to sing Violetta. Because la traviata - literally, the rogue - has several lives: there are the vocal fireworks swirling around in Act I, there is the profound tranquility of a retired life in the countryside in Act II , there is sacrifice, illness, joy and then the final death…

La Traviata also paints a vitriolic portrait of her time: if Violetta places love above all else, to the point of sacrificing herself to save the honor of the Germonts, her sacrifice only makes the hypocrisy and baseness of the materialist bourgeoisie. It is because the era of La Traviata saw the revolutions of 1848 die out. The society that Verdi describes now lives under surveillance, small pleasures and big sad parties... No doubt the song of Violetta was too free and too burning for this too narrow world: she had to pay for it with her life.

This Traviata marks the revival of a landmark production: the staging by Jean-François Sivadier, created at the Festival international d'art lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence in 2011. In this version, imagined by an authentic A theater craftsman and great opera lover, Violetta's destiny seems to merge with that of a performer who burns her last lights on stage before saying her unforgettable farewells under a fine golden rain. This show is carried by a new generation of performers who breathe new life into it.
