Le Grand Macabre: Le Grand Macabre Ligeti

Das Team rund um Regisseur Krysztof Warlikowski verbindet eine langjährige erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit, die sie an alle großen Opernhäuser Europas geführt hat, in mehreren Inszenierungen auch an die Bayerische Staatsoper. Hier brachte das Team in gleicher Konstellation zuletzt 2023 Dido and Aneas ... Erwartung auf die Bühne. Le Grand Macabre ist die achte Inszenierung am Nationaltheater nach Tristan und Isolde, Salome, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Die Gezeichneten, Eugen Onegin und Kabaret Warszawski. Für Le Grand Macabre entwirft Małgorzata Szczęśniak wieder Bühne und Kostüme, wie seit 1992 für alle Inszenierungen von Warlikowski. Seit über 20 Jahren verantwortet die Lichtgestaltung Felice Ross für die Opernproduktionen des Teams. Kamil Polak, der 2008 in der Sparte „Animierter Kurzfilm“ mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnet wurde, gestaltet die Videos. Der Tänzer und Schauspieler Claude Bardouil übernimmt die Choreographie, Christian Longchamp die Dramaturgie. Kent Nagano, ehemaliger Generalmusikdirektor der Bayerischen Staatsoper, zeichnet für die Musikalische Leitung verantwortlich.

Der Weltuntergang: Nekrotzar, der titelgebende Große Makabre, ist aus seinem Sarg geklettert und nach Breughelland gekommen, um die Auslöschung der Erde zu verkünden. Er behauptet, der Tod zu sein (Vermutung: es könnte sich um einen Schwätzer handeln). Doch sein apokalyptisches Drohen und seine pechschwarzen Allmachtsfantasien werden von den Breughellandianer:innen durchkreuzt. Nekrotzar, unter massivsten Alkoholeinfluss gesetzt, wird am Weltuntergang gehindert, eingerahmt in ein Gesellschaftstreiben, das dem puren Hedonismus in all seinen Facetten frönt. Nichts bleibt hier unvorstellbar oder Tabu. Das Breughelland wähnt sich rauschbetäubt im Himmel, wo sich dann doch alles ganz irdisch zuträgt. Nekrotzar kriecht beschämt zurück in seinen Sarg. Damit ist der Tod tot. Zeit für das ewige Leben. Wie im Himmel, so auf Erden. Das Jüngste Gericht hat stattgefunden. Sterben wird jede:r, nur sicherlich heute nicht. Das von György Ligeti selbst als Anti-Anti-Oper bezeichnete Werk ist durchzogen von historischen Musikzitaten, Extremstkoloraturarien, vertrackter Rhythmik, sonderbarem Instrumenteneinsatz und allerlei Überdrehtem. Es wird an der Bayerischen Staatsoper erstmals aufgeführt.

The team surrounding director Krzysztof Warlikowski share a long-standing successful collaboration, which has taken them to all of Europe’s grandest opera houses, including the Bayerische Staatsoper in several stagings. Dido and Aneas most recently brought the team here in the same configuration ... Anticipation on the stage. Le Grand Macabre is the eighth staging at the Nationaltheater after Tristan and Isolde, Salome, DieFrau ohne Schatten, Die Gezeichneten, Eugen Onegin and Kabaret Warszawski.For Le Grand Macabre Małgorzata Szczęśniak once again designs the stage and costumes, as she has for all Warlikowski productions since 1992. Felice Ross has been responsible for the lighting design for the team’s opera productions for 20 years now. Kamil Polak, 2008 Oscar winner in the “Best Short Animation” category, designs the videos. Dancer and actor Claude Bardouil takes on the choreography. Christian Longchamp is responsible for dramaturgy. Kent Nagano, former General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, conducts.

Apocalypse: Nekrotzar, the title-giving grand macabre, has climbed out of his tomb and come to Breughelland to proclaim the end of the world. He claims he is death (we speculate: could it be pure bull?). But the Breughellanders frustrate his apocalyptic plans and hellish omnipotence fantasies. Heavily intoxicated, Nekrotzar’s apocalypse is averted, hemmed in by all manner of social chicanery, which indulges pure hedonism in all its facets. Nothing is inconceivable or taboo here. Also intoxicated, Breughelland believes itself to be in heaven, where everything entirely earthly of course then takes place. Ashamed and embarrassed, Nekrotzar creeps back into his tomb. Death is therefore dead. Time for eternal life. In heaven as on earth. The Last Judgement has come. All will die, just not today for sure. The piece described by György Ligeti himself as anti-anti-opera is criss-crossed with historical music quotes, extreme coloratura arias, thorny rhythm, peculiar use of instruments and all kinds of heightened elements. It will now be performed at the Bayerische Staatsoper for the first time.
