The restless and ubiquitous Figaro first appeared before the public in the plays of Beaumarchais, causing a considerable scandal: the idea of ​​the injustice of class boundaries, that, according to Karamzin, “even peasant women know how to love,” seemed impudent and free-thinking to a person of the 18th century. Lorenzo da Ponte turned a caustic French comedy into a buffoonish Italian libretto, and thirty-year-old Mozart wrote the immortal music that is heard on opera stages all over the world today.
The Marriage of Figaro is a comedic play, a merry festive show of dressing up and confusion growing into chaos; sometimes only the desire not to miss a single Mozart note keeps the hall from bursts of laughter. But the genius of the composer gives the madness that is happening in the Seville castle a hidden depth. In the first scene, Figaro measures the dimensions of the room with a ruler; to everything that the viewer sees further, Mozart applies another, invisible scale. It judges high and low, and its gradations are subtle and contradictory. The results are ambiguous: if you apply this "ruler" to the social hierarchical ladder, then the count will be at the top, Figaro - at the bottom, but if you try to measure the spiritual qualities of the characters - rather the opposite. The question of honor and honesty is also raised: one is ready to kill for his honor, but he himself is dishonest, the other piles up deceit upon deceit, but does not lose honor. For all their affinity with the masks of the commedia dell'arte, the characters of the "Marriage of Figaro" are living people, and their "indicators" on the scale of height and meanness, nobility and plebeianity can change dramatically, so that even an envious intriguer can transform into a caring mother, and a dissolute ladies' man - in a loving husband. Alive - real, feeling - the heroes are made by Mozart's music.
The Marriage of Figaro is performed in two stage versions at the Mariinsky Theatre. Since 2009, Alexander Petrov has been staging in the Concert Hall. The action of the opera is moved to the beginning of the 20th century, in the era of modernity. Being chronologically closer to us, the action acquired new semantic nuances. When the offending youth Cherubino, along with being sent to the regiment, receives a gas mask, it looks not only funny, but also scary, and when the formidable jealous Almaviva pulls a wooden dog on wheels, a reasonable question arises, who is the capricious child in this castle. The manners of the class already differ little from each other, the class world is about to become a thing of the past, but the stratification of society into people “special” and “simple”, into people with privileges and without will not go anywhere, as well as the desire of people to love, to be loved and fight for your happiness.
The circular space of the Concert Hall poses special challenges for the directors. In The Marriage of Figaro, they are solved with elegant wit: the viewer seems to be examining a three-dimensional model of the house, looking into it from different angles. Неугомонный и вездесущий Фигаро впервые предстал перед публикой в пьесах Бомарше, вызвав при этом немалый скандал: мысль о несправедливости сословных границ, о том, что, по слову Карамзина, «и крестьянки любить умеют», человеку XVIII века казалась дерзкой и вольнодумной. Лоренцо да Понте превратил язвительную французскую комедию в буффонное итальянское либретто, а тридцатилетний Моцарт написал бессмертную музыку, которая сегодня звучит на оперных сценах всего мира.
«Свадьба Фигаро» – это комедийный спектакль, веселое праздничное представление с переодеваниями и разрастающейся до хаоса путаницей; порой только желание не упустить ни одной моцартовской ноты удерживает зал от взрывов хохота. Но гений композитора придает происходящему в севильском замке безумству потаенную глубину. В первой сцене Фигаро линейкой измеряет габариты комнаты; ко всему, что зритель увидит далее, Моцарт применяет другую, невидимую шкалу. По ней оценивается высокое и низкое, и ее градации тонки и противоречивы. Результаты получаются неоднозначные: если приложить эту «линейку» к социальной иерархической лестнице, то граф окажется наверху, Фигаро – внизу, если же попробовать измерить душевные качества героев – скорее наоборот. Так же ставится вопрос о чести и честности: один готов убить за свою честь, но сам бесчестен, другой громоздит обман на обмане, но чести не теряет. При всем своем родстве с масками комедии дель арте персонажи «Свадьбы Фигаро» – живые люди, и их «показатели» на шкале высоты и низости, благородства и плебейства способны кардинально меняться, так что даже завистливая интриганка может преобразиться в заботливую мать, а распутный ловелас – в любящего мужа. Живыми – настоящими, чувствующими – героев делает моцартовская музыка.
В Мариинском театре «Свадьбу Фигаро» исполняют в двух сценических версиях. В Концертном зале с 2009 года идет постановка Александра Петрова. Действие оперы перенесено в начало ХХ века, в эпоху модерна. Оказавшись хронологически ближе к нам, действие приобрело новые смысловые оттенки. Когда проштрафившийся отрок Керубино вместе с направлением в полк получает противогаз, это выглядит не только смешно, но и страшно, а когда грозный ревнивец Альмавива тянет за собой деревянную собачку на колесиках, возникает резонный вопрос, кто в этом замке капризный ребенок. Манерами сословия уже мало отличаются друг от друга, сословный мир вот-вот уйдет в прошлое, но расслоение общества на людей «особых» и «простых», на людей с привилегиями и без никуда не денется, равно как и стремление людей любить, быть любимыми и бороться за свое счастье.
Круговое пространство Концертного зала ставит перед постановщиками особые задачи. В «Свадьбе Фигаро» они решены с изящным остроумием: зритель как будто рассматривает трехмерную модель дома, заглядывая в него с разных сторон.
