The timid farmhand Nemorino loves Adina dearly, but she has not yet reciprocated these feelings. To try his luck with her, he buys a love potion from the quack doctor Dulcamara with his last money, which is actually a cheap Bordeaux. His behavior now becomes much more confident, which annoys Adina quite a bit. When Sergeant Belcore asks her to marry him, she sees this as an opportunity for revenge. Nemorino, in desperation, buys a second bottle of love potion. To get money for this, he enlists in the army. But just before the marriage is to take place, Adina refuses to sign the contract. Nemorino is not here yet and without him she cannot take revenge. Meanwhile, a wealthy uncle of Nemorino has died, who left his wealth to him. Gianetta and the other farm girls are now very interested in Nemorino, who attributes this to the double portion of the love potion. Proud of the effect of his elixir, Dulcamara informs Adina of the sacrifices Nemorino has made to win her love. This makes a big impression on Adina, who has to admit that she also likes Nemorino. She quickly decides to ransom her lover from Belcore's army and confesses her love to Nemorino. Everyone except Belcore is happy and the gullible villagers immediately buy up all of Dulcamara's stock. This makes a big impression on Adina, who has to admit that she also likes Nemorino. De schuchtere boerenknecht Nemorino houdt zielsveel van Adina, maar zij heeft deze gevoelens nog niet beantwoord. Om toch zijn geluk bij haar te beproeven, koopt hij bij de kwakzalver Dulcamara van zijn laatste geld een liefdesdrank, die in werkelijkheid een goedkope Bordeaux is. Zijn gedrag wordt nu veel zelfverzekerder, wat Adina nogal ergert. Wanneer sergeant Belcore haar ten huwelijk vraagt, ziet zij hierin een mogelijkheid tot wraak. Nemorino koopt in wanhoop een tweede fles liefdesdrank. Om aan geld hiervoor te komen, meldt hij zich aan bij het leger. Maar vlak voordat het huwelijk zal worden voltrokken, weigert Adina het contract te tekenen. Nemorino is er nog niet en zonder hem kan zij geen wraak nemen. Intussen is een rijke oom van Nemorino overleden, die zijn vermogen aan hem heeft nagelaten. Gianetta en de andere boerenmeisjes hebben nu veel interesse voor Nemorino, die dit toeschrijft aan de dubbele portie liefdesdrank. Trots op de uitwerking van zijn elixer licht Dulcamara Adina in over de opofferingen die Nemorino zich getroost heeft om haar liefde voor zich te winnen. Dit maakt grote indruk op Adina, die moet toegeven dat zij ook wel van Nemorino houdt. Snel neemt zij het besluit haar geliefde uit Belcore’s leger vrij te kopen en bekent Nemorino haar liefde. Iedereen behalve Belcore is gelukkig en de goedgelovige dorpelingen kopen direct de hele voorraad van Dulcamara op.
