"Gaetano Donizetti's  comedy L'Elisir d'amore  ( The Elixir of Love ) was presented 180 years ago, on May 12, 1832, in Milan, at the Teatro della Cannobbiana. At that time, Rossini had already retired from composing stage music for three years (since the premiere of Tell Vilmos in 1829); Bellini dies three years later, after writing The Puritans, in 1835; Verdi's first stage work, the opera Oberto, had to wait another seven years. Donizetti was 35 years old at the time, in the middle of his career, at the beginning of his most successful creative period, fourteen years before his theatrical debut and twelve years before the revision of his last opera. Among his main works, Boleyn's Anna was already completed, but later he only composed, for example, Lucrezia Borgia, Lucia Lammermoor, Maria Stuart, and his other famous comedy operas, The Daughter of the Regiment and Don Pasquale.

The  Love Potion,  however, also stands out from this period, but not only from this period, and not only from its author: the masterpiece is one of the most loved and most played pieces in the entire history of opera. What is the reason why it is still popular after 180 years, and is loved by stage managers and audiences alike? Why, for example, did the other three Donizetti works presented in the same year (Fausta; Ugo, conte di Parigi and Sancia di Castiglia) not become a similar success?

What is indispensable for really good operas: you need a witty, well-paced text book. Therefore, the praise goes to the librettist of the Potion, Felice Romani (1788-1865). The Genoese librettist and musicologist revised and translated Le philtre, written in 1831 by the famous French dramatist and librettist Eugène Scribe, in just seven days - Donizetti had another seven days to get the music ready in time for the show. The French author's libretto was originally written for Daniel Auber - his work was presented in Paris in 1831, but today it is perhaps only mentioned because it has a common source with the Love Potion."
