"Pour, pour, bring beer, bring wine!" Daily visit to Lutter's wine cellar. The artist Hoffmann will lose himself in surreal worlds. There he meets three women: the lifeless Olympia, the unable singer Antonia and the dominant Giulietta. They are a distorted image of his real fears and unfulfilled dreams. In search of recognition and truthfulness, he will be ready to give everything. He sells his soul. What remains is the memory.


An opera. Four directors? ›The Tales of Hoffmann‹ is not a biographical opera about the poet ETA Hoffmann and is not based on a single novel by him. Rather, it is a hodgepodge of motifs and fragments. So what could be more obvious than encountering the different worlds in different theatrical languages?

Christopher Alden, Charles Edwards, Inga Levant and Nigel Lowery dare to experiment and each stage an act of the opera. The artists, who come from England, Russia and the USA, have been seen around the world in productions at the English National Opera in London, the Opera Bastille in Paris, the Metropolitan Opera in San Francisco, the Berlin State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera and the Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg.

»Schenkt ein, schenkt ein, bringt Bier, bringt Wein!« Täglicher Besuch in Lutters Weinkeller. Der Künstler Hoffmann wird sich in surreale Welten verlieren. Dort begegnen ihm drei Frauen: Die leblose Olympia, die verhinderte Sängerin Antonia und die dominante Giulietta. Sie sind Zerrbild seiner realen Ängste und unerfüllten Wunschvorstellungen. Auf der Suche nach Anerkennung und Wahrhaftigkeit wird er bereit sein, alles zu geben. Er verkauft seine Seele. Was bleibt ist die Erinnerung.


Eine Oper. Vier Regisseur_innen? ›Hoffmanns Erzahlungen‹ ist keine biografische Oper über den Dichter E.T.A. Hoffmann und basiert nicht auf einem einzelnen Roman von ihm. Vielmehr ist sie ein Sammelsurium von Motiven und Fragmenten. Was liegt also näher als den unterschiedlichen Welten auch in unterschiedlichen Theatersprachen zu begegnen?

Christopher Alden, Charles Edwards, Inga Levant und Nigel Lowery wagen das Experiment und inszenieren je einen Akt der Oper. Die aus England, Russland und USA stammenden Künstler_innen waren bisher weltweit mit Inszenierungen u.a. an der English National Opera London, der Opera Bastille Paris, der Metropolitan Opera San Francisco, der Staatsoper Berlin, der Bayerischen Staatsoper oder der Opera du Rhin Strasbourg zu sehen.
