À partir du livre de Jean Cocteau dont Jean-Pierre Melville a réalisé un film, Philip Glass a composé un opéra dont s’empare à sa manière Phia Ménard : Les Enfants terribles a quelque chose d’hypnotisant.

La scène commence sous la neige. Blessé par une pierre dissimulée dans une boule de neige lancée par Dargelos, Paul doit garder la chambre. Livrés à eux-mêmes, Paul et sa sœur Élisabeth, gouvernés par leur fantaisie, transforment leur chambre en scène permanente avec la complicité de leur ami Gérard…

Créé en 1996, cet opéra est l’adaptation d’un roman de Cocteau de 1929, qui fait vivre dans un huis clos des adolescents aux passions interdites. Mais plus que le roman, c’est l’adaptation cinématographique de Jean-Pierre Melville en 1950, et dont Cocteau est le narrateur, qui a constitué la matière du livret (en français) de Philip Glass.

La musique est interprétée par trois pianistes qui, contrairement aux chanteurs, ne s’arrêtent jamais (minimalisme oblige !), les scènes étant entrecoupées de mouvements instrumentaux comme autant de possibles divagations. « Un jour, j’ai rêvé d’une porte qui glissait sur ses gonds : une image parfaite de la modulation, puisqu’il s’agit de franchir une porte pour pénétrer dans un lieu nouveau », explique Philip Glass.

Phia Ménard, qui signe la mise en scène, regarde l’œuvre dans le prisme du vieillissement : les corps des adolescents deviennent ceux de pensionnaires d’une maison de retraite… La vie existe toujours, même reclus ils n’en restent pas moins désirants, joyeux, émerveillés, amoureux et jaloux ! Peu importe, ces femmes et hommes sont hors de la société, isolés comme le sont les personnages de Cocteau.

Une méditation sur le temps et sur l’enfermement qui nous plonge dans un labyrinthe d’émotions !

Based on Jean Cocteau's book, which Jean-Pierre Melville made a film of, Philip Glass composed an opera which Phia Ménard captures in his own way: Les Enfants terribles has something hypnotizing about it.

The scene begins under the snow. Wounded by a stone hidden in a snowball thrown by Dargelos, Paul must keep the room. Left to their own devices, Paul and his sister Élisabeth, ruled by their imagination, transform their bedroom into a permanent stage with the complicity of their friend Gérard...

Created in 1996, this opera is the adaptation of a novel by Cocteau from 1929, which brings to life behind closed doors teenagers with forbidden passions. But more than the novel, it is the film adaptation by Jean-Pierre Melville in 1950, and of which Cocteau is the narrator, which constituted the material for the libretto (in French) by Philip Glass.

The music is interpreted by three pianists who, unlike the singers, never stop (minimalism obliges!), the scenes being interspersed with instrumental movements like so many possible ramblings. "One day, I dreamed of a door that was sliding on its hinges: a perfect image of modulation, since it is a question of going through a door to enter a new place", explains Philip Glass.

Phia Ménard, who signs the staging, looks at the work through the prism of aging: the bodies of adolescents become those of residents of a retirement home... Life still exists, even reclusive they remain no less desirous , happy, amazed, in love and jealous! Regardless, these women and men are outside of society, isolated like Cocteau's characters.

A meditation on time and confinement that plunges us into a labyrinth of emotions!
