Als Sträfling 24601 saß Jean Valjean jahrelang im Gefängnis ‒ wegen des Diebstahls von einem Laib Brot für seine hungernde Familie. Als er 1815 auf Bewährung freikommt, trifft er auf eine brutale Umwelt, die ihn als Verbrecher stigmatisiert. Um ein neues Leben zu beginnen, taucht Valjean unter und wird fortan erbarmungslos gejagt von Polizeiinspektor Javert. Zu Wohlstand gekommen, befreit er Cosette, die Tochter der Arbeiterin Fantine, aus den Klauen der skrupellosen Thénardiers und nimmt sie in seine Obhut. Gemeinsam geraten beide Jahre später in den Pariser Juniaufstand 1832, der dem Leben aller Protagonisten eine dramatische Wendung gibt …

As Convict 24601, Jean Valjean served years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. When he was released on parole in 1815, he encountered a brutal environment that stigmatized him as a criminal. In order to start a new life, Valjean goes into hiding and is henceforth mercilessly hunted down by police inspector Javert. Having become prosperous, he rescues Cosette, the daughter of the worker Fantine, from the clutches of the ruthless Thénardiers and takes her into his care. Years later, both of them get caught up in the Paris uprising of June 1832, which gives the lives of all the protagonists a dramatic turn...
