L'incoronazione di Poppea -  (The Coronation of Poppea)

John Eliot Gardiner with the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists celebrate the 450th birthday of the 17th-century genius and founding father of opera.
There is little doubt that the novelty of his works transcended the art of his ancestors, ushering in a new era in music. Always fascinated by human passions, Monteverdi devoted his life to developing techniques to translate them into music. As such, he can be directly compared to the greatest artists and scientists of the early 17th century, such as Galileo, Bacon, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Caravaggio and Rubens.
The top-class ensemble consists of internationally recognized soloists as well as members of the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists. The three great Monteverdi operas will be performed under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner and staged in semi-concert by Elsa Rooke. The orchestra, which uses historical instruments from Monteverdi's time, plays a central role as it is placed on the stage and integrated into the action.
The highlight of this international tour, which runs from April to October 2017, are performances at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, as well as at the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Festival and the Lucerne Festival.

In front of Poppea's house, Ottone professes his love for Poppea, who, however, is Nerone's lover and hopes to become empress as a result. Nerone's wife Ottavia laments her fate and Seneca is unable to console her. When he tries to dissuade Nerone from making Poppea empress, he draws the ruler's wrath on himself. In Poppea's garden, Nerone vows to crown her beloved. She advises killing Seneca. Again she rejects Ottone, who decides to reward Drusilla's faithful love. Calmly, Seneca receives the news in his country house that Nerone is demanding his death. He calms his friends and carries out the Emperor's order. In the imperial palace, Ottavia orders Ottone to kill her rival Poppea. After much hesitation, Ottone decides to kill the sleeping Poppea in her garden. but Drusilla snatches the dagger from him and is suspected of being a murderer herself. Drusilla takes all the blame from Nerone to save Ottone. However, this explains the true facts. He is expelled from the country and Drusilla accompanies him. Ottavia's guilt in the planned murder finally gives Nerone the right to cast out his wife and crown Poppea in her place.
